Hi All, Does anyone have any experience with their puppy chasing cars, and any good advice on how to stop it from happening? For those who haven't seen some of my other posts, Coco is a 15-week old Lab/Shepherd Mix that my wife and I adopted last Monday. Whenever we take her for walks, and she sees a car or truck drive by, she stops and stares at it, until it reaches us, then tries to chase it ! I obviously want to break this habit sooner rather than later, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd happy listen. Thank you!! Rob
Re: Coco is Chasing Cars Hi Rob , sometimes this is what they do when they are wary of vehicles , they bark and lunge and then because the vehicle goes away , they think that they have got rid of it : What I would do it to take Coco to a place where there is maybe light traffic , if you can find a seat all the better , sit quietly with her trying not to stress because she will pick up on it . When you see a vehicle coming , dont say Good Girl, this will encourage her to react . Rather distract her to sit and look at you , this can be practised at home , Sit , Look at Me , then treat . Try to keep her attention until the vehicle has gone , then a treat . Just stick at it, it usually works, its just de sensitisation really .

I will start with the training at the house and continue from there. She has the sit command down already, and we're working on "stay", I feel like once I have that command down, hopefully getting her to settle instead of chase will be the next step. Thanks again!
Re: Coco is Chasing Cars Hi, I remember Otis as a young pup, he is eleven months now getting excited by cars he would try and chase them, I didnt do anything special to stop this behaviour, just kept him on the lead near cars. He just grew out of it though, now they dont bother him at all. The advice above is very good advice though, so i should try that. Maggie
