I have been reading about the benefits of Coconut oil for dogs and apparently it's is very good as toothpaste. I was wondering if anyone has used it for their dogs teeth and what your views are?

    Thanks xx :)

I'd just stick to a proper doggie toothpaste :) Proper toothpastes have been designed to do a good job of cleaning, with gentle abrasives and enzymes to get rid of plaque.

I went to a lecture by a dentist who specializes in human teeth whitening (it was a lecture for dentists - altho I’m not one). She commented on coconut oil and did actually say it has excellent antibacterial qualities for the teeth and gums - she brought it up cos her patients ask her. But... it needs to remain on the teeth and gums for 20 minutes to have an effect. It wouldn’t last that long in my dog’s mouth!!

My boy of 6 years old has beautiful white teeth, which I’ve never cleaned. I put this down to his diet of raw meat and raw meaty bones, no kibble. I guess if you feed kibble, it’s very sticky on the teeth - like eating biscuits - and must be cleaned off regularly.

Our dogs have always been on dry kibble, and never have their teeth cleaned. They look great, and the Vet agrees. They do chew on nylabones, real bones, sticks, and dismember soft toys.

Yep a vet told me he gave his Poodles raw bones to clean their teeth. He also fed kibble.
