Hi, my beautiful Brea had 6 puppies last week and they are all doing well, however they are all growing so fast that I fear that they will not fit the tyvek paper collars I got for identifying them by the end of next week. (collars have been changed twice already!) Does anyone with experience of this have any idea what I could move onto as an alternative. I was looking at the adjustable Trixie Whelping collars in medium to large but not sure they will last long either. Pups were quite big to start with I think in spite of mum being quite small, and have doubled their weight in a week (which I believe is normal from all the research I have done). This is my first solo litter and have never bred black before so ID is essential (the three previous litters I was involved with were all yellow and easier to tell apart! ) Any Ideas would be helpful Thanks Carol
Re: Collars for newborns if it's for identification our breeder used nail varnish....Riley's claws were a fetching shade of yellow when we chose him
Re: Collars for newborns Nail polish! What an awesome idea. That would work great. Lol I could see my girls lined up painting puppy nails. Great idea
Re: Collars for newborns Have nail polish spots on 4 of them too (1 boy & 1 girl don't have polish) but it seems to come off quite quickly - probably because of all the grooming Mum is doing! and I have always been a belt AND braces kinda girl, LOL
Re: Collars for newborns I don't know if this will help for newborns but when we went to pick our puppy the breeder shaved a small patch of fur on her, there was one in a different place on each pup. It was still visible two weeks later when we collected her.
Re: Collars for newborns When we went to choose our pup, all the pups had the ends of their tails painted a different colour ;D Maisie was known as "blue tip" until we chose her name!!!
Re: Collars for newborns My experience with guide dogs was that they like to use nail varnish too. However, I like to use fabric collars, like these http://www.warwickwhelpingboxes.co....ixie-pack-of-6-soft-puppy-collars-2-44-detail which are small enough to use on new born labrador puppies, as I found that the paper ones were a little too wide and cut into one or two of the puppies' necks :'( My last litter were quite big and boisterous, so we had to invest in a set of larger size collars by the time they were four or five weeks old, and we did find that the puppies would manage to remove/chew/play with the collars, which could make things difficult. Also they need to be washed regularly (at least every couple of days), which I do by removing and washing one collar at a time, although I guess you could just get two sets. (Why did I only just think of that!....) Helen.

I wasn't sure if the trixie ones would be too small but I did see those ones on the warwick whelping box site.
Re: Collars for newborns I used Velcro ones for my litter - great choice. They lasted for whole 9 weeks. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-WhelpI...elcro-Collar-Bands-For-Breeders-/251462571898
