    Hey all

My boy woke up this morning and has been shaking his head constantly. I know this may mean allergies, itch or ear infection.

I decided to clean his ears, place some drops (ear cleaning product), made up essential oils.

Since the ear cleaning, the head shaking slightly subsided. However, he still shakes his head more the usual.

Any tips for what time might be?
    Any suggestions for this situation?

    Thanks

I think a trip to the vet will be needed. It could be ear mites or an infection which needs more than cleaning.

You really need to take him to the vet - and I'd be very wary of what you put in a dog's ear. They have a self cleaning mechanism (the skin grows outwards and removes debris etc) and you really don't want to mess this up. Either by leaving a problem untreated, or by treating it inappropriately. Persistent ear problems in dogs is a right nightmare to clear up.

Poor boy, definately a trip to the vets as he could have something lodged in his ear that you can't see, grass seeds etc. can be so painful for dogs. A few years ago my rescue dog Charlie had grass seeds sticking in his ear and needed surgery to remove them. I couldn't see them as they were quite far down his ear. Hope he will be OK.

Yes, go to vet. If he continiously shakes his head he may well get an aural haematoma which will need an op. That is a collection of blood in the ear flap.

A brown medium cross-breed dog we meet every morning shook his head so much he got a haematoma in his ear flap (and I don't think it took that much head shaking to develop the haematoma). Had to have it surgically fixed (expensive procedure, included general anaesthetic) and his ear has never been able to stick up naturally again. So I'd also definitely recommend seeing a vet for persistent head shaking to prevent a potentially bad situation. Best of luck getting it sorted out.
