Today will be the second day my lab (15 months) hasn't managed to open her bowels. Have fed wet food instead of normal dry and added olive oil to meals. She is straining but nothing comes out. I was thinking if no poo today then off to the vet tomorrow - does that sound reasonable? She is well in herself and acting normally

    Re: Constipation

Has she eaten anything that might have caused an obstruction? Anything tough and fibrous, or with lots of bone and little meat, or something like a sock?

Given that she is straining I'd head off to the vet today. Just to be on the safe side...

Just as an aside, adding olive oil doesn't help with an obstruction as it's pretty much digested by the time it gets to the lower part of the bowel. A non-digestable oil is much more effective - paraffin is what my vet uses, given orally in an eye dropper every hour. That passes through the whole system undigested and has a significant lubricating effect.

I would phone the vets and ask their advice as to whether or not to wait until tomorrow :)

Good news! We're always happy to hear about poo round here. I'm currently waiting for a delivery or it's a vet visit for us tomorrow! ::)

Ah, a poo thread. We love 'em.

Pongo was sick as a parrot yesterday - I'm fairly sure it was a dried cow-ear that I gave him for a treat mid-morning (I thought he'd finished it rather quick) which eventually came up again in his third pile of vomit IN ONE PIECE and just a little soggy.

Anyway, by the end of yesterday he had nothing in his system - he'd had a couple of squidgy poos and four huge piles of vomitted food - almost entirely undigested - over the course of the day. Last night he was sick just once - nothing but bile, poor boy.

Today he is on chicken and rice (breakfast and dinner), no sickness, and looking more his old self although a bit lacking in energy and bounce. He is eating happily. But he can't shift a poo. Took him for a walk and he was straining and straining but nothing happening.

I'm hoping we'll get some results when he comes out with me for his bedtime poo and wee trip (in half an hour). If not I guess I should phone the vet tomorrow?

    Re: Constipation

Still not a well boy. Early this morning we had the re-appearence of at least half the chicken and rice he'd eaten yesterday (in a big solid pile of sick, completely undigested). Early morning walk produced quantities of poo (hoorah) but completely liquid (boo). We're out of rice, so gave him a little very wet kibble for breakfast. He seems to have kept that down (so far). We had to put him in doggy day care for a few hours this afternoon, and they say he was squirting throughout the afternoon. And he still looks very, very sorry for himself.

So tonight he has had no dinner (and - amazingly - he doesn't seem to mind); and we'll skip his breakfast too. The good news is that he is drinking plenty of water.

He doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, but he's very low.

Poor puppy. When he is like this he doesn't look like a big giant dog at all, he just looks like my little tiny puppy. :'(

My Bella does better with oatmeal than rice....rice seems to go straight through her, where the oatmeal just firms everything up nicely and is still sooper bland.

Hope Pongo is back to himself soon...I just hate it when our fur-babies aren't feeling 100%

    Re: Constipation

Oh euch. When we went out for our bedtime walk in the garden last night, he wandered off out of sight for a few minutes (not unusual, I was hoping he'd gone to find a quiet place for a poo).

This morning he vomited again in the kitchen....we couldn't figure out what it was because he'd had nothing to eat since yesterday morning ... or so we thought....

It was brown and runny and smelled of.... fox poo.

    Oh Pongo.

He has had a very small breakfast of one boiled egg mushed up in water. I really hope that stays down - as it stands he has only managed to keep down two small meals since Monday morning.

Maybe you should talk to your vet. I'd be worried about dehydration, with all the vomiting and diarrhea.
