Re: Cooper's criss cross walking It might feel like tough love Teena Ann but it will work, like Jacqui says, don't give in to his longing looks,it will be worth it.Dexter tortures me with the looks he gives out for his food ......and that's only because he wants it immediately and isn't prepared to wait ,let us know how you get on x
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking I am concerned that Cooper hasn't been eating for days from what you say. Although you say he is bright, one of the first signs of illness in the dog is not eating, I am probably up the creek but it still might be a good idea to have him checked by the vet. Otherwise, put a handful of kibble in his bowel, put that on the floor in front of Cooper, leave it there for ten minutes, if he hasn't eaten it take it away. I usually feed my dogs twice a day, so in the evening do the same thing, put the food down, leave it ten minutes, take it up again. If he hasn't regained his appetite after three days then definitely take him to the vet. Also try to be matter of fact about it, don't plead with him, just put and take the food away entirely without emotion. No dog will willingly starve to death.
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking I tuk him to the vet he is absolutely fine he is jus holding out for meat and tastier human food jus like wat Julie and Stacia told and the kibble is fresh jus bought it 2 days back and specially formulated for mobility since he has HD im so depressed by his habits should i feed him 2 times i usually feed him three times a day i give him rice with boiled beef or chicken or with boiled vegetables in chicken and eggs he gets rice 2 times and kibble once since he doesnt eat it i feel like im spending too much on his kibble and its getting wasted. But im gonna try the steps tat u guys suggested me and Stacia should i keep fresh food every meal and take it away after 10 mins or jus keep the same food from his previous meal for his next meal
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking
i give him rice with boiled beef or chicken or with boiled vegetables in chicken and eggs he gets rice 2 times and kibble once since he doesnt eat it
Teena Ann, if you want him to eat the kibble, you have to only give him the kibble - not beef and chicken. Just put down the kibble at every meal. Use fresh kibble at each meal (kibble should be stored in the bag it came it, with the top sealed, in a dry place - so you can't keep it out and use it again, it gets stale and Cooper will be less likely to eat it). If you keep going, you won't waste the kibble for long. If you give up, and give him beef and chicken, you'll keep wasting the kibble he won't eat.
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Julie for how long should i do this and wat if he doesnt eat it every time i keep it and wat should i do to the kibble if its not eaten should i throw it awayand wat abt chicken and beef wen can i give him those i will be happy if he eats his kibble atleast once in his meal time some say try mixing salmon oil in his kibble :
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking I suggested only a handful so it isn't too much to waste when you throw it away. Once he starts eating the handful with gusto, you can add more as he is eating. Have you tried putting a little warm water on it to release the aroma?
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking
Julie for how long should i do this and wat if he doesnt eat it every time i keep it and wat should i do to the kibble if its not eaten should i throw it awayand wat abt chicken and beef wen can i give him those i will be happy if he eats his kibble atleast once in his meal time some say try mixing salmon oil in his kibble :
If you want him to eat the kibble, only feed him kibble. No beef, no chicken, no salmon oil. Only the kibble. If he doesn't eat the kibble, throw it away and try next meal time. Try this for 3 days. If you give him any other food at all, it doesn't count and you haven't tried it properly. If he has eaten nothing for 3 days, absolutely nothing, then think what else to try - but I bet that won't happen. But if you keep giving him chicken and beef he won't eat the kibble. You cannot feed a puppy on beef and chicken without it being part of a properly balance diet, it is not healthy for them. So it is best Cooper learns to eat his kibble.
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Happy New Year!!!!!!!Thanks Stacia and Julie im gonna follow this for 3 days and will let u knw abt Cooper's progression he did not eat this morning i jus gave him his supplements im gonna feed kibble in his next meal time jus like how Stacia suggested lets see how tat works out once he starts eating his kibble when can i give him beef or chicken as a part of his diet i tried pouring warm water over it but it neva worked
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Here is a photo of Cooper at 9 months now Jus put a handful of Kibble in his bowl he neva touched it and he is sleeping ryt nxt to it this is second meal hope he doesn't luk like he his lost weight
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Jus put a handful of Kibble in his bowl he neva touched it and he is sleeping ryt nxt to it this is second meal hope he doesn't luk like he his lost weight
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Be strong Teena Ann He has his puppy dog eyes on : You can do it. Stick to the plan. No extras AT ALL until he is reliably eating his kibble. You don't need to give him these extras EVER if he is eating his kibble as it contains ALL the nutrients he needs. I would give it a few weeks and only then if he is eating kibble well think about a treat of raw meat or fish but probably only once of maybe twice maximum in a week but IT IS NOT NECESSARY and you may risk him relapsing. Stay very firm with him. He looks lovely
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Jacqui u mean to say tat he will starve for a few days or even few weeks without even eating a grain of food like fasting wont it harm his health im worried about tat he already luks thin and famished to me ??? doesnt luk like a 9 month old puppy
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking He looks the perfect weight to me, both my Labs look the same weight, plump dogs are not desirable, especially not good for their joints. Don't leave the kibble there, take it away after ten minutes. If you don't give him anything else and be strong, he will be gulping it down in two or three days. Don't forget to put down his usual drinking water!.
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking No, he does not look thin, he looks great! He really does. Maybe you are expecting him to eat much more than he really needs? How much are you expecting him to be eating each day? What is being suggested is to make him hungry so he eats the kibble. It won't hurt him. Just try it for 3 days as suggested. Kibble only and fresh water in a separate bowl.
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Teena he looks just fine! He will give in and eat the kibble if he is hungry - honest it won't be more than a few feeds missed and he will get the message that you are not giving in. Please trust us on this one x
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Jacqui and Rachel im trusting u both on this one and going with my instincts tat it will work he has not had anything till now except water and he drinks oly less much of it he jus spills it on the ground and lies flat on top of it so i give him water if he is thirsty i wont leave the water bowl out for a long time and has been sleeping the whole day without his food but is active and running around the house he has become lazy boisterous stubborn and out of control i feel he may become aggressive because he trying to snap nd bite if touched like holding his collar etc ges i have to wait and watch his behaviour when he grows up do u think Cooper has reached his full height or he still needs to grow
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Stick to the plan with the kibble. Don't give in. Maybe you need to teach Cooper that good things happen when you take hold of his collar. If only bad things happen when you take hold of his collar (pulling him somewhere he doesn't want to go, or tying him up when you are doing the cleaning) then he is going to be unhappy about you taking hold of his collar. Does that make sense?
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Teena Ann......I'm in such sympathy for you...I've never had this problem but I feel bad enough when I have to make dexter wait for a meal if he has been doing strenuous excercise....he gives me really miserable looks, and presses himself up against the food cupboard....and then in desperation goes to find Chris to see if he will give in before me......stay strong, the advice you are getting is right,he won't starve himself away.....don't make a big issue about it with him either....keep your voice happy and upbeat .....put his bowl down,if he doesn't eat it ,pick it up again and try him with some fresh kibble at the next meal.he is trying his luck because he knows in the past you have given in and provided tasty encouragement.....stay strong now and you will be on track, give in and you could have a fussy eater for the rest of his life. Every forum member loves and cares for dogs so none of us would tell you anything that would hurt to harm Cooper or that we wouldn't do ourselves, but I totally understand that this isn't easy for you,it would be killing me xxx
Re: Cooper's criss cross walking Arrrg!!!!!! Its killing me to see Coop not having eaten for 2 straight days and tdy bein the third seems like he aint gonna give up his stubborness like the previous 2 days i left the kibble for 10 mins and tuk it away wen he neva ate for the 1st 2 meals during his 3rd meal i don knw wat changed he jus smelled it and was hesitant to eat and was smacking his lips so i tried adding warm water nd to my surprise he ate and as he was eating i kept adding a handful of kibble for a total of 3 times with the warm water and he ate it so in 2 days he had one meal though not enuf so i tried it tdy in the morning with warm water and he ate 2 handful of kibble but with hesitation, lot of distraction and running around as he was eating i tried mixing his food with the water so as to encourage him do u tink wat i did was ryt or should i stop doing the mixing part Cooper is already luking tired nd thin but is alert and active i don knw how he manages to do tat how long can he go without food like this and if he aint eating wat r the other alternatives tat i can try. I totally stopped giving him rice, meat, eggs and gravy which were his favourites and im keeping oly the kibble but i can see he is hungry as he keeps sniffing the ground and barks helplessly its so heart wrenching but im thankful to all of for ur advice it really is keeping me goin
