One of my best friends has had breast cancer and had a partial mastecomy, she is still struggling Last night she came to join us for dinner so I put Hattie and Charlie in the utility room with the door closed. Charlie adores her and she him, when she sits down Charlie always climbs up puts his arms round her neck for cuddles and Charlie licks She came in Charlie knew it was her and he managed to open the door but he was extremely calm with her which neither of us could believe. He calmly walked up to her sniffed her surgery side for quite a while and never once attempted to have his usual cuddles, instead he politely enjoyed a good scratch and treated her so very gently, throughout the evening he periodically came into the room went to her to check things out. Is it possible he sensed the cancer or knew she was unwell? We were all very touched by his behaviour xx
I have not had personal experience but have heard of many dogs who sense someone is not well or had an operation and become very gentle dogs when around the person. Some dogs can sense cancer from the urine, another dog kept making attention to a woman's breast and it turned out she had cancer. I found it very heartwarming that Charlie was so sensitive. You would never have thought he would have been like this when you struggled with him in earlier days
Bless Charlie , sensitive boy and yes , I believe that some dogs, often Labradors , can detect cancer . I watched a programme about how they tested the dogs with urine samples from people, one of whom had cancer , the success rate was amazingly high . I absolutely know that dogs sense illness , Sam knew when my husband had experienced a stroke , so I think yes Helen, he did know
Oh Charlie, what a lovely, gentle boy you are. Whether he sensed the cancer or just that your friend wasn't feeling her normal self he was an absolute star. With the dogs sense of smell I suspect he knew things weren't quite right. You should be very proud of your boy
Such a good boy Charlie I personally struggle with my spinal injuries and Harley seems to know when I'm bad as she won't pull in the lead, cuddles up to me more and is calmer around me.
Every Charlie update we seem to see yet another fabulous side to him Helen. You must be very proud of him, and your input to get him to where he is
I've experienced it a lot with my 3. the 2 boys really react in a certain way to cancer and I now know what it is. They have indicated on dogs who have not yet been diagnosed many occasions. If they do it now to a dog I know whats wrong with the dog. Its happened too consitantly for it to be an accident. They were great with my dad when he was in the last stages of his cancer and would avoid the area which it was situated and treated him so calmly it was so sweet. They have been so careful with me when I've had a bad chemo reaction and even Rory who is very excitable has been amazing when he's sensed I'm ill. When I had sepsis last April he kept touching the infected area I think he could smell the infection. They were so upset about this illness and Midge did not leave my side and had to be touching me all the time when I got home from hospital. both boys are walked separately so its not been a learned reponce either. Charlie is just a lovely boy
Ah Helen,I hope your friend is on the road to a successful recovery...Charlie sounds like really wanted to take care of her.....he's not daft either knowing how to break out of the room ! x
Thanks for asking Angela, I am happy to say she is recovering but it's been a long hard road and she doesn't know what's at the end of it but she remains positive and so do we x Thank you everyone, if nothing else Charlie is always such a gentle boy xx
