Hello everyone. We are new to the forum and are preparing to bring home our first lab puppy in a couple weeks. We have been giving a lot of thought to the things we need to get prior to bringing the puppy home. The one area where we have noticed a variety of opinions is crate bedding. I suspect what you use depends on each individual puppy but what I would like to know is what types of products people have had the most success with. Or perhaps most have found using no crate bedding at all works best? Thank you in advance for your advice.
Re: Crate bedding Welcome to the forum!! We used a fairly flat dog mattress, covered in a tough fabric. I would have liked to have used something more cushy and cosy, but our boy would have chewed it to bits (but he was a 9 months old scallywag when we got him, not a pup). The ideal is to make the crate comfortable and cosy, so a nice, soft dog bed is the way to go, I think
Re: Crate bedding welcome to the site from me and jasper black lab 6 month,........the crates come well recommended.....good luck with your new puppy, male or female ? what name ? colour ? will look forward to photos
Re: Crate bedding Welcome guys. We were loaned a bit of "VetBed" and had this over a couple of folded towels at one end and newspaper at the front of our crate. We graduated onto a "duvet style" light matress. Lilly didn't on the whole chew though. Others I know used an old duvet and duvet cover folded up. Good luck with your new arrival
Re: Crate bedding Welcome,it's so exciting getting everything ready for a new puppy. We bought a purpose made lining from the pet shop when we bought the crate ,it's like a furry car seat cover.ive put a cotton blanket in too.in our lounge he has got a fatboy dog bed/ beanbag. Dexter ( yellow lab nearly 9 months) hasn't ever chewed anything,he had a half hearted go at the label on the beanbag but a low growly Deeeeeeexxxxter from me stopped him in his tracks. Hope that helps x
Re: Crate bedding We use a fairly thin dog bed/mattress type thing, we bought something cheap and something that didn't look like it could be destroyed too easily. We were also given a fleece blanket that smelled of her mum and we put in a towel that we slept with for a night to try and make her feel more secure with our scent. I guess the rest depends on you and whether you intend to allow your little one to go to the toilet in their crate. We have been very vigilant by getting up through the night etc to enforce the toilet training. Good luck, it's harder work than I ever imagined but a lot of fun.
Re: Crate bedding We used quite a large crate (actually a Cruft's Play Pen), and made a bed at one end with an old sheepskin and old towels, including one which she had in her den at the breeder's, so it smelt of her mother and siblings. Then we put newspaper down at the other end, but actually she hardly ever made a mess in there. I dont think it really matters what you use, so long as it is washable, and wont matter if it gets chewed up a bit. And of course so long as it isnt dangerous to your pup.
Re: Crate bedding The breeder of our dog gave us a bit of old towel that had been in with the puppies so it smelt of mum and siblings and very similarly to the others we used a thin rectangular dog bed and added a layer of vetbed on top of that to change over from the towel. So exciting getting your new pup, looking forward to pictures
