Hi All We are very soon - two weeks, one day and counting to be the proud new parents of a gorgeous black lab girl - no name yet as can't decide!!! So the question is being new to crates what size should we get for her, quite happy to get a smaller one then replace as required when she is older. Thank you
How exciting We started with a 24" one which we still have and it has been fine. Our pup is now nearly 14 weeks and we're probably putting up the big crate 42" one this weekend as he's gettin big quickly. He can curl up and lay down in his 24" one now at this size but not fully stretch anymore. He can stretch a bit leaning against the sides
I used a small crate initially, simply because I had one lying around that I use for my chickens. I then bought a 42" and moved her into that (using the divider) at 14-ish weeks. I'd suggest just buying the 42" and using the divider as she grows, less faffing around.
We got a 42" with a divider - doors that open from either the side or end depending on set up, which helps with where you can put it. It has worked well for us, and at 10 months still lots of room for her to stretch out.
I agree with getting the 42" with the divider. We got the one that opens as QuinnM15 described, and it is handy. Good luck with the new pup!
Ah welcome to the Forum and enjoy all your other puppy purchases too, looking forward to hearing about her coming home and what name you finally decide on .....
Hello and welcome to the forum! I see you've had good advice already. Have you bought everything else you need yet? The countdown to puppy's arrival is so exciting, with lots of shopping opportunities
Thank you everyone for the lovely women and helpful advice. 42" now ordered along with half the doggie shop I think, vet bed, car crate (she will be coming to work with me), various bowls and toys, blankets etc.
I'm going to get a 24inch to start when I get mine as can move it up and down easier. If you get 42 get a divider otherwise they can use it as a toilet
Thanks everyone, I have decided to get a 24" too for her to sleep in in our room but with her 42" downstairs (with a divider) for daytime use and ultimately night time. I love this forum already....................................
Nice! I was lucky to find a 24" and a 36" together from a neighbor for cheap. She outgrew the 24" just last week (at 16 weeks old, 27 lb or so). I could have continued to squish her in there, but we moved to the 36 with no divider and she did great and seemed to enjoy the space. I was noticing how long she is already at 4 months when stretched out in the 36" and thinking we may have to go to 42 when she's full-grown!
