Hi all, We have had our new puppy Ripley for 2 1/2 weeks now (she’s 11 weeks) but she still howls like a banshee most of the time she’s in her crate. She goes in happily with a kong or treat ball but within minutes she’s howling the house down. We have been ignoring her till she’s quiet but she doesn’t seem to be improving. We didn’t have any issues with our last pup and are at a lose. I can only assume she was given attention for it at the breeders. Any suggestions welcome. She’s very bossy and always barking to get what she wants, we call her boss baby! Please help x
I wouldn’t worry too much unless it’s still happening in a month. Ours only did it for the first two nights, and even to this day she literally never barks or makes a sound. Weird as it sounds, I used to go out and lay next to her for a few minutes until she fell back asleep. I think leaving them alone to suffer just makes the anxiety even worse.
I've always started out feeding my dogs in their crates. Other ideas would be to put her in there when she's REALLY sleepy and tired. Is it in an area she likes to be or is comforting? Maybe if it is in a room your family hangs out in she would go in on her own to sleep or chew a bone.
We have the crate in the living room but in a corner. We started by leaving the crate door open and every so often, dropping a treat in when he went in of his own accord. When the kids got too loud or he got sleepy, he chose to go in there for a nap, when he did, we left the door open. On day 3, we closed it for about 5 seconds and opened it again before he got upset. Kept building it up until he was ok with it being shut during the day while he napped or I had to go out. The advice I was given was to make the crate a positive place. Treats, kong, a safe haven where no one is allowed to bother him x
I kept the crate on my bed with me, he howled at first but then eventually fell asleep, is the crate in your bedroom?
We have her crate in a family room. She makes more noise if we’re in the room and constantly jumps up and barks at us to let her out. She settles eventually if she’s left alone in the room. I’ll try feeding her in there too, that could help, thanks x
For a couple of days I would let her fall asleep on my lap, then lift her into the crate as she is dozing, gently talking to her so she opens her eyes and sees where she is but is too sleepy to protest. Eyes close again and she is out for the count.
