So I'm doing the crate training with the clicker as described in Pippa's article. Done 3-4 sessions over the last couple of days. Just wondering, though - Simba seems not that excited about this whole thing. We are at the stage where he will go right in, but....

This AM he goes in, I click and treat. He then stands there looking at me. Comes up and gives me a small whine (more treat please!) Few more seconds, wanders over and gets in the crate! Yay! I click and treat. Now he's done it twice. He wanders back to the crate, wanders over to me, looking at me longingly...then goes and flops down on the floor and is snoozing.

    What to do??

He hasn't had food yet this AM - thought he would be motivated. But somehow he just seems to not quite get the pint of the whole thing.

The whole time I am basically silent - should I be saying the "good boy" when he gets in as well as C & T??

Kinda hard to make a whole lot of progress when I can't get him doing the behaviour more than 2x in a row!!

Not sure Lisa...but maybe up the treat value to get his interest ...what are you using at the moment?

I've had this conversation with my husband in relation to recall......I take Dex Out 6am when he hasn't had his breakfast and i think he is hungry and it works ok .....but Chris says does there come a point where he knows he will get his breakfast anyway as per his routine so why should he 'behave ' for a treat prior.......

I think Dex is bright...but Im banking on him not being THAT brainy!

I would up Simba's treats....we are going for the top, step,of recall when I get back so Dex is gonna get jack potted with something amazing when he comes back......well,he's only had kibble so far so dead birds are amazing as far as he is concerned! But Im going to try sardines or roast chicken ,something like that might fire Simba?just my thoughts x

Ps Additionally to c and t I do vocally praise ,ear rub, tummy tickle as well every time we get something we have asked for,but you know by now that we are just picking through training the best we know how...I don't know if that's right ,it's just a bit like our collective high 5 when we are making progress x

I would suggest only feeding him in the crate. He has to think it is THE best place to be... :)

Yes, I had the same thought about the treats. I'll try some roast chicken this PM, see what happens.

And I have been feeding him in the crate, so hopefully he's getting happy associations there!

    Hi Lisa,
If you are using the right treats, and the dog is hungry, he will be literally throwing himself into the crate to get his click and treat :D :D

And no, you do not need to talk, praise, or anything else. Just fast as you can, lots of repetitions.

If the dog does not want to play, the stakes are not high enough

Hmm.. Well I tried some roast chicken. Not much more enthusiasm. I wonder if I tried to move ahead on the steps too fast? Well, tomorrow another day. Maybe I'll try cheese...
