Re: Crufts gundog day I saw it a couple of times but the one I can remember was a boxer's handler. She grabbed the "lip" and was turning it inside out to keep him in the right stand.
Re: Crufts gundog day I am not a fan of the Loch Mor dogs, they are far too heavy. But, I do admire their underlying conformation (while thinking oh, if only they were much, much lighter....). Does anyone have a link to the results for the BACS Labrador class so we can see whether more photos of these dogs are available? I can only find results for the Field Trial classes... There were 4 entries in the Field Trial dog class, and three dogs were placed, there was one entry in the Field Trial bitch and that dog won its class. Field Trial - Dog Entries: 4 Abs: 0 1st NEVER DISARRAY AT WYLANBRIAR (MRS D STEVENS) 2nd FT CH SAXAPHONE BROWN ALE OF LINCSWOLD ( MR R KING) 3rd WYLANBRIAR WIERD FISH (MR A & MRS D SCUTCHER & STEVENS) Res FT CH WAYSGREEN BARRACUDA (MR P DIXON) Field Trial - Bitch Entries: 1 Abs: 0 1st ABBEYSTEAD REEVE (MRS S L MINCHELLA)
Re: Crufts gundog day Here is an article explaining the BASC gamekeepers' classes. http://basc.org.uk/gundogs/basc-at-crufts/
Re: Crufts gundog day It's always difficult to find the BASC results...it was a nightmare last year too.
Re: Crufts gundog day Ziggy had qualified to enter the class for Clumber spaniel dogs with a field trial award but because he was born and docked after April 2007 he couldn't take part. There were no entries in that class as every single Clumber with a field trial award has a docked tail. Not sure how the other spaniel breeds faired, but I reckon there were not many entries. Even Labradors who are not affected by the rules around docking were a bit thin on the ground in those classes.

Re: Crufts gundog day
I am not a fan of the Loch Mor dogs, they are far too heavy. But, I do admire their underlying conformation (while thinking oh, if only they were much, much lighter....).
IMO Loch Mor Giulietta has nice underlying confirmation and a nice head. Just needs a diet! Then she'd be a lovely dog. But, also just IMO, Loch Mor Romeo does not have a nice head and is far too wide and short - def needs more than just fat camp.
Re: Crufts gundog day Struggling to find more photos of these dogs.... I think we are looking at photos for the Malmesbury Trophy? Re: Crufts gundog day Well, I can't find more photos of the Labradors in the BASC class, unfortunately. Heidrun's seem to be the only ones that exist!
Re: Crufts gundog day I have a look later at the photos I took from that class and will post. Off out training my dogs now. ;D
Re: Crufts gundog day
I don't like the way some of the handlers are twisting the dogs' Lips (the soft fleshing part of their mouths) to make them stand for the judges.
I seen this happen quite a bit whilst watching the dogs being looked over. I also didn't like that some of the dogs clearly weren't happy - tail underneath them, ears back, panting ;(
Re: Crufts gundog day
I also didn't like that some of the dogs clearly weren't happy - tail underneath them, ears back, panting ;(
I'm really surprised to hear this, it's not something I've seen myself. For all we can debate the cons of Romeo's too heavy conformation, there is no doubt that he is having a ball and playing to his audience - I think this is one of the reason he wins, he displays the Labrador temperament and bags of personality in the ring. A lot of winning dogs seem to have this love of the ring, I think.
Re: Crufts gundog day I only managed to catch the gundog group judging but I also noticed how the handlers were pulling the dogs face on one side to make them hold their head still - particularly with the Weimaraner as the cameraman got a nice close up of the lady doing it! It's not natural for a dog to stand as still as stone and I'm sure the judges understand that!!
Re: Crufts gundog day I am not a big fan of showing really. I like to see dogs being dogs. Some dogs clearly love being in the ring, their tail is wagging and they are enjoying being there with their handler, but others really don't look like they are enjoying themselves at all. I much prefer the agility and the demonstrations, rather than the parading around the ring! Chloe
Re: Crufts gundog day Regarding the mouth grabbing that I posted about earlier, I have emailed the kennel club to see what they think.
Re: Crufts gundog day
Regarding the mouth grabbing that I posted about earlier, I have emailed the kennel club to see what they think.
You are talking about the handling that is at 45.33 of this clip? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRwtjBqRRVQ It's not very sensitive, clearly some dogs have been trained to stand still without much handling - the Labrador is a good example. Other dogs not so at all, and the handlers are manipulating them quite a lot. To be honest, I thought some of the lead jerks on slip leads were worse, particularly as the dogs entered the ring for the first time.
Re: Crufts gundog day There was quite a bit of jowl grabbing on the highlights last night. Compared to the "proper" show classes I thought the gamekeepers handling was pretty sympathetic.
Re: Crufts gundog day Yes, the standard of handling varied from awful to fantastic. You may not like his dogs, but the handler of the Loch Mor dogs handles them very well (although I still noticed a couple of lead jerks, it was nothing like for some dogs) - they stand in a show stance, wag their tails, and raise their heads, when he stands back and holds his hand above his head. He was the only handler that had his dog standing for the initial inspection without touching it. I suspect the way Romeo (not in the ring this year) turns round and wags his tail at the audience for laughs may also be on cue...
