Re: Crufts
Heidrun..... What about Clumbers that are bred and worked in Scotland by Scottish owners who CAN by Scottish law be docked. Are they too excluded from Crufts?
Jacqui, the docking ban in Scotland is even stricter than in Wales and England. No dogs, not even working dogs are allowed to be docked. So in theory Clumbers bred in Scotand could be brown at Crufts because they would have full tails. Trouble is I don't think there is anyone breeding working Clumbers in Scotland.
Re: Crufts Absolutely heartbreaking No doubt the Jemima bashing will now commence again too. Thank goodness she has the courage to keep going and expose this disgraceful treatment of dogs. I don't know which is worse, the eyes, or those legs. Words fail me. And the Kennel Club has failed those dogs. I really thought last year, with the vet checks, that they had finally taken a stand. But no. They have completely capitulated to the breeders that they represent.
Re: Crufts She's already commented on the state of the Bassetts and put up pictures of the Albany pack as contrast - some very beautiful dogs, still working and fit for function
Re: Crufts
Did anyone see the vet talking to Clare Balding on the Crufts higHlights program last night? I couldn't believe my ears - not only did he recommend Cavalier King Charles as a family pet (which are nice little dogs, but which have terrible congenital health problems) - he also suggested that for families with children, where the parents don't have much time to spend with a dog, that a Labrador would be a good dog. Or (wait for it) - a springer spaniel!! Or else he suggested a German long-haired pointer. For a family who don't have much time to spend on the dog! He only partially redeemed himself by saying that families where everyone works full time probably shouldn't take on a dog.
I did see him. He rendered me speechless. I also wondered whether Clare Balding felt compelled to explain who cares for Archie whilst she's working, often on location. Obviously, she didn't. Clare
Re: Crufts I am still determined to go tomorrow, prepared to give Crufts a chance - see for myself. In between Lisa Tarbuck (who I normally quite like but "I'm hopeless and know nothing" is never a good look, I feel) there was a slot on having a closer look at some of the breeds - it was a slot on Mastiffs. Having just read the history of why the BBC dropped Crufts, and how Channel 4 had promised to "put health and well being of dogs at the heart of its coverage" I settled down to watch, hoping for some intelligent (and constructive - after all, the people you want to influence are not going to listen if you open with let's shoot all show breeders at dawn) critique. Er...no. I honestly thought by the look of the dogs we were going to hear about excessive facial features - but the presenter said they were "magnificent examples of the breed" with no exaggerated features at all. Well, I know nothing about Mastiffs, I suppose, but still...they didn't look like magnificent examples to me. They looked horribly exaggerated. However. Open mind, I'll go look. I've charged all my cameras and camcorders for tomorrow.

Re: Crufts
Still trying to decide whether to go tomorrow :-\
I'd love to go, go for it and enjoy!
Re: Crufts I would jump at the chance to see it firsthand. I just don't know how people can even find these terribly exaggerated dogs attractive. They are simply ugly and painful to see At least Labradors are not yet in such a shocking state - but what will they look like in 50 years?
Re: Crufts I can't go! A mini family emergency means I have to help my sister in law. Nothing serious, but got to do it. Helen, or anyone, if your journey North passes near Wimbledon 2 tickets including seats for best in show going spare. PM me if anyone can use them. Watching flyball and agility at Crufts on the telly now though...which is cheering me up. Wish OH would stop saying "can Charlie do that?"
Re: Crufts Things will be fine - if I help, so of course I must. Nevermind, family is far more important. I'll try get to another show. There must be others. Have no idea where though...will look it up.
Re: Crufts Oh so sorry you can't go Julie Hope all is well with your sister in law. That's really very kind of you to offer your tickets to anyone that is going, but if we do decide to go we won't be passing anywhere near Wimbledon as we are Hampshire Thank you very much for the offer though xxx
