Hello Labrador Family! My pup webber is 15 weeks old. He is doing ok just supper supper excited around other people and dogs. We are still working on house breaking. He is getting better but still has a hard time holding his bladder if he really has to go. One thing that really concerns me is when he goes in his crate as soon as I leave the room he barks hysterically. He does bite himself or try to get out but he barks not stop and will pee in the crate as soon as me or anyone walks in the room he is ok. I'm sure there is some isolation distress involved. I do not make a big deal on leaving or entering. I give him a frozen Kong when I leave filled with peanut butter. I try to exercise him 30mins a day in addition to play time and training at home. When we go for a walk/jog he will sometimes get tired after 10 mins so we stop. IDK what else to do. Is this something he will grow out of or am I doing something wrong. I will take any advise. Thanks.
oh also my vet gave me composure pro phrenomes. i tried a half tablet today and he still barks if he can not see anyone in the room
Why not keep the crate in the main room where everyone is - kitchen, living room? That way he's not isolated. Dogs are sociable, they want to be with their family.
Have you trained him to be in his crate? Build up the time slowly minute by minute? There is an excellent article on the main site: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/crate-training-your-labrador-puppy/ which I used when Bailey first arrived.
Yes he knows when to go in his crate. The crate is in the den where there is constant traffic. The problem is not hom going in his crate but more so when we have to leave the house he barks relentlessly
My dog used to hate his crate and being alone. He would bark the entire time. As Samantha said - you need to train them to be in their crate so building up the time slowly. We had to start for 3 seconds - so basically walk out the room and come back. Then build it up slowly from there. Never get him chance to bark then go back in and give a huge fuss and lots of treats. Have you got a kong? You could give him kongs in there when he goes in so he associates it with good things. It took quite a while - a month or so but my dog has no issues with his crate now. He never goes in by choice, but settles straight down as soon as he goes in.
