My dog has curly fur which can sometimes smell quite greasy - a bit like a horse. After touching his fur, your hand also smells. He is a 3 year old neutered male black lab, and is fed on dry food [ Eukanuba, Arden Grange etc] He is perfectly healthy, he swims [which he likes] and has an occasional bath [which he dislikes]. Is this normal ? Is there anything dog-friendly I can do to mask or get rid of this smell, without causing him any distress ?
My boy has a wave that runs down his back , not a curl but some wavy fur, many do . Re the smell , Lab also do have a very definite smell , I don't find it unpleasant at all and certainly would want to mask it with any product . As long as he is healthy, I wouldn't worry about it too much , oh and welcome to the forum !
Kate Thanks for that. I don't actually find the doggy smell unpleasant either, but people have occasionally commented after stroking him that the odour from his fur is on their hands. Dogs do have their own smell, I suppose, as do horses, and of course, humans ! Peter
There is a condition where a dog's coat feels greasy, have you thought of taking him to the vet to see if he does have a problem or that he is completely normal?
Harley also has a "wave" of coarser hair down her back and onto her tail. The rest of her coat is really lovely to touch and quite a contrast to the wavey hair. She has a smell. It is her smell. I have a smell too, I am sure. But it sounds like there may be something different going on with you dog. Only a professional will be able to advize.
