My pup is now 6 months old and at this age the guidance on his food (Royal Canine Lab Junior) suggests that he can start moving to only 2 meals per day. Is there a particular reason behind this guidance? Are there any health considerations behind it or is it simply for the owners convenience? I very rarely feed him without it being used as a play or training opportunity and to be honest I would be quite happy sticking to the schedule we've got which is loosely based around 3 feeding windows. That said, if sticking to this would be detrimental to his health then I of course will be reconsidering...
I don't know what the rationale is behind the move from 3 to 2 meals but there's no reason you should change if you don't want to, it won't be detrimental to your pup's health to have his daily allowance divided by three meals.
I agree. If what you are doing is working for both of you, then there doesn't seem to be any need for it to be changed up. I will likely keep our Roamin on the same schedule he is on now as long as it is working for him. It seems to me that their metabolism would benefit from smaller meals throughout the day.
We decided to stick to three meals a day and Wilson will be a year old the week after next. He has a bigger breakfast and dinner and only a small (50g) lunch and he seems to be thriving on it. We're at home most of the time so it seemed only fair that he ate when we did.
All my dogs, young and old, have been fed 3 times a day for several years now. Started when I was having awful problems getting weight on a previous dog and the habit's just stuck. The dog's would be extremely put out if I tried dropping a meal now. Mealtimes are the highlight of their day! LOL If the routine works for you, why change it.
I still fed my 15 mth old puppy 3meals a day! In regard to health, not that I'm a vet or anything, but it's probably better for their digestion to have more meals over less...
[QUOTE=" In regard to health, not that I'm a vet or anything, but it's probably better for their digestion to have more meals over less...[/QUOTE] Yes you're quite right. I remember my vet asking about my dog's feeding routine and he said exactly the same. Little and often is far better than one huge meal.
Ziggy is just coming up on 6 months and similarly we use his daily kibble allowance for training/desirable behaviour and have no intention of moving to 2 feeds. He'll normally get a small amount in a slow feeder @ meal times then the rest is in a pocket/pot and given throughout the day.
Agree we won't be changing - it's so much food to given in such huge quantities I like to spread the food out or if we're going out out it in aknog or slow feeder. Generally though lunch is smaller meal
