@Emily_BabbelHund I've had various breeds of dog both long haired and short hired, big dogs and small dogs but the common factor is that none of them have been bathed apart from rinsing off mud/sand/smelly stuff None of them have been smelly or had any skin problems
I prefer using salmon oil so I don't have to recalculate dinner portions to allow for the sardines Lazy I know. Also I give the salmon oil on a daily basis father a couple of times a week. I think it's really a case f deciding what works for you and your furry family
I agree and am being mindful of the bathing for sure. I use an oatmeal shampoo that is supposed to be healing, but I bought it at TJ maxx and probably need to research a good one. Her dandruff does look better today, so I will keep an eye on it. Hopefully the consistent food, coconut oil, and less bathing unless necessary will help!
I had no idea bathing was something to avoid. She loves the water and if I'm in a bath, she steps in. I will be more careful for sure. I brushed for the first time this week and I've seen an improvement. But could be the consistent food, coconut oil, oatmeal shampoo, brushing, and who knows! But I'll keep all of this in mind thank you!
I LOVE Rotts! I've had 2 and don't remember any dandruff or monitoring how much I bathed them. Could be a difference in their coat!
Axel as a puppy had very flakey skin so I added salmon oil. Then all the sudden when his adult coat came in (same time I added salmon oil) he had no more flakey skin. Well, back in early November I had to switch him off chicken and salmon oil because he had an allergy to one but was unsure which. So he hasn't had any fish since but still has no flakey skin. So I don't know if the oil helped him much after all, I do feed him high quality kibble though. Odie I do give salmon oil because of all of his skin issues. It helps him with the dry skin!
When Casper came to us at 5 years old, he had sores, irritated skin, dandruff, with very dull looking fur. We put him on a single protein diet, plus salmon oil. In two weeks his irritated skin and dandruff cleared. When he was off salmon oil, (can't remember why) his fur kept in good condition, but a little dry skin and flakiness returned, not a real problem, but after 2 weeks back on salmon oil it disappeared.
Cold weather and central heating can also affect a dogs coat. When we had a bout of really cold frosty weather Charlie had a bit of dandruff, now it's warmed up there's none. Our house is permanently cod so no central heating issue for us x
Hi I have a silver lab pup and has so much dandruff and flaky skin ive tried giving him coconut oil, sardines and still havent seen improvement after a month. Please let me know what worked for your pup!! Thanks
Have you changed food recently? It could be something in the food that is causing him irritation. If not, I'm using salmon oil and it works for my dog.
If you bathe a dog, their coat will produce more oil in response to being stripped of it - and then you need to bathe the dog again, to get rid of that... and so on and on, in a vicious circle you've created. Dogs don't need to be bathed - in fact, really shouldn't be. If they have rolled in something smelly like poop or dead fish(!), then you may need to bathe them with a doggy shampoo - but in my young lab's 4 year life, that has been precisely ONCE. EVER. She does not smell at all. If your dog gets muddy, hose them off with water alone. Of course, over time, your blankets and sofa covers will start to smell - that's not because your dog needs a bath, but just because.... sofa covers and blankets need to get washed!! Wash your sofa covers and blankets and you will find your dog and room miraculously smells better - without any bathing of the dog involved. All dogs should be on a wild salmon oil supplement - like Grizzly Bear Wild Salmon oil - for the DHA it contains: https://www.avidog.com/every-wonder...ortance-pastured-meat-chicken-eggs-dogs-diet/
My boy was the same so I was recommended trying Yumega Oil in his food and it’s fantastic and now everyone comments how shiny his black coat is!
Sheldon eats one raw egg a week. He’s 3, is my epilepsy service dog, and has never had dandruff. He gets quarterly baths unless we have a beach day then it’s more often so I can get the salt water off of him. I also spray sunscreen on him (yes, dogs need sunscreen) and massage it in. I receive endless compliments on his coat. He eats diamond naturals raw.
