Last night we had a power cut. Rolo was in his crate in the kitchen, I leave a lamp on very dim and the hall light on. I do this more for me cos I'm sure he's not bothered by the dark having fantastic vision. When the power went out I said to hubby I'm going to turn a torch on for Rolo. He told me not to be daft so I didn't do it. Should I have? He didn't make a sound. He was awake when it went off but still was silent. Am I being daft worrying about this?

I'm not sure if this is relevant to dogs, but I know with my ferrets it's very important that they get enough dark time, because too many hours of light increase the risk of adrenal disease, which is a nasty thing that's very common in ferrets. So, I may be swayed a bit by that, but I think it's a good thing for pets to get a "proper" night. I definitely wouldn't leave a light on for a dog overnight - as you say, they have great eyesight anyway.

I am never happy leaving mine in the dark, mainly because we have had a couple who were clearly scared of the dark so I always leave a light on for them if I am not home. When I am home if they don't seem worried I don't put it on.

This is really interesting as Bella usually starts whining as the light goes out?! But whether that's me leaving the room as opposed to just lights out is another matter :)

I don't think dogs need a light on. My dogs sleep out in a kennel so are in the pitch black. I suppose it's what the dog is used to but if Rolo didn't appear to be worried he probably isn't bothered one way or the other.

Inca rarely sleeps if the light is on - must think it's playtime. We always leave her with the lights off at night.

I've never left lights on for dogs - it's never occurred to me to do so. I guess I think they have great night vision, and fabulous hearing and noses, so it's not at all like humans and dark. Charlie never has any trouble finding his way around - or finding BBQ rats and other delicious items - in the dark, that's for sure.

I think there is a certain amount of natural light at night so I don't leave artificial lighting on. I once did but Chepi couldn't settle.

My OH works late some nights. I used to leave a light on in the kitchen for him getting home.
No more. Since getting Cupar the light has been switched off as it may disburb Cupar.

I don't leave lights on during the night but I would leave a few on if I went out on an evening regardless, it would also prob somehow make me feel less guilty for leaving her! :-\
