Max got his first taste of the big wide world on his own four feet today! He was such a good boy. We met up with my mum and her Border Collie, Daisy. Daisy is very chilled and paid Max absolutely no attention whatsoever. I think that was better for Max as he seems a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to other dogs. He was very wary but by the end he was right next to her and gave her a good sniff (whilst Daisy still completely ignored him!) haha! He was brilliant on the lead for our first time out. Barely pulled and only remembered it was there a couple of times for a chew. I'm hoping he won't bother with it as his confidence grows. No opportunity to let him off as a young lad was milling around with a Staffie and it's not a nice part of town so kept our distance. Am going to take him to a semi-enclosed area tomorrow hopefully and get him off the lead there. He even walked to next to the road with the traffic going up and down - not an overly busy road but knowing how scared he was of the traffic on our carry walks I was very proud. All in all a success I think
Re: Debut in the big, wide world ON FOOT! Thats lovely ,well done to both of you Yes , let him off lead in a safe area as soon as possible , they tend to stick to us like glue when tiny and also tires them out
Re: Debut in the big, wide world ON FOOT! Thanks everyone. Today we took Max to a field and let him off the lead! Bit scarey but he totally did follow us around the field. We practised some recall and some sits in a strange place with long grass and he lapped it up. Not gonna get too cocky or confident about it though. I realise it's only his second walk and he's still a bit wary outside. Pulling and running off may be in our future but I really hope not
Re: Debut in the big, wide world ON FOOT! Thats great ;D ;D The more you allow Max off lead at this age, the less likely he is to abscond in the future , they are like little sponges at this age, soaking up all the training an loving it too
Re: Debut in the big, wide world ON FOOT! Pulling might be but not running off, just try suddenly changing direction without saying anything, or hide, or duck up another path, you fill find that the dog will always keep his eye on you in future Somebody said the very wise words to me years ago "it is not up to you to keep an eye on your dog, but your dog's job to keep his eye on you".
Re: Debut in the big, wide world ON FOOT! omg I LOVE this post. I'll keep this in mind in future Thanks for that.
Re: Debut in the big, wide world ON FOOT! Well done Max and you! Albert will be taking his first steps into the world on Friday and I can't wait. Going a bit stir crazy at the moment! I hope it's as successful as your first outing. Good luck for the future and happy days in the great outdoors!
