I think my old girl mabye getting a little stange in her old age. She has gone deaf and is becoming visually impaired but is exhibiting some strange behaviour that can't be expained by loss of hearing and eyesight. Anyone got any experience of this? She 13 qnd in good health for a dog her age, but we have recently lost her friend Doug.

Is she looking at walls and barking, looking disorientated? This could be a sign of dementia or it could be a sign of an illness, best to check with the vet, just to rule out a health problem. You say she is in good health but sometimes something is brewing. However, having had a dog who was bereaved, they do become depressed and mope about, mine recovered completely when I brought a puppy home.

Barking and not eating, sitting staring into space and becoming lost in the house and "accidents" in the house were signs a neighbour had. He was overjoyed when a new Vet found a cracked and maybe painful tooth but it did nothing to improve any of the behaviours. The only time the dog was normal was when he was hunting. He was only 10 years old.

Shes not bark at the walls, but she is barking at nothing and she is looking lost but I do think her vision is starting to go. The vet checked her recently when he looked at her lumps and bumps and she seems ok but this has happened quiet recently so I think I mayhave to phone a friend in Staffs and see what she thinks.

I'm trying not to worry but I am she's not herself and I'm not happy with her I know she's old but stuff seems to be happening with her quickly. She seems happy and is eating well but this morning she was scared to eat her food when Rory had finished his and she did not recognise me when I had my hair tired up either she just hid.

If it is the beginnings of dementia, there is a pill from the vet which will help.

My old dog who was 16 had a stroke. After that he use to stand in door ways and just staring into space.
He ate well and still wanted to go for a walk. His eye sight was bad, he was in no pain, but I think he had dementia. He did sleep more and more, until one day he didn't wake up. He was a lovely lad, who we got from the rescue. We still miss him.

My old rescue was exactly the same, started when she was about 12. Barking at nothing, pacing around staring at walks. We were given a pull by the vet, sorry can't remember name, but basically allows more blood to flow to the brain. It was amazing the difference in her was incredible and she lived a happy old life to nearly 16 without the anxiety so I recommend you go to your vet and ask. It really did help and apparently not a strong drug either.

My old springer was on a medication called Vivitonin for mild dementia. It worked really well for her.

Eileen Anderson, from the excellent eileenanddogs blog has written a book about dementia in dogs and about caring for senior dogs with memory problems. I haven't read it yet, but if it is anything like the rest of her writing it will be good. It's called Remember Me

That's it! Vivitonin. Works brilliantly in our experience.

Yes, definitely see your vet. You know your dog best, and obviously something is going on. Hopefully you can pin point a cause. Let us know how it goes!
