Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Good luck!! Keeping everything crossed that Purdy goes home with you xx
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Hello all, We went to meet Purdy on Saturday. She was a lovely dog but very bouncy and I knew she would be too much for our daughters. The rescue also had another lab, Indie who had come in on Thursday due to the owner's second dog bullying her. She was perfect for us and is currently lying on her bed after coming out for a run with with me (well I ran but my legs aren't much longer than hers lol so she trotted.) It's early days but she is doing well so far. She's a dream to walk-doesn't pull at all, gazes up at you constantly and her recall is brilliant. She has a lovely nature and is great with our daughters (they are good girls with dogs anyway - they've grown up with dogs so they are respectful towards dogs anyway which obviously helps.) Thanks for all your replies and good luck messages. I'm off to the training threads now as I have a question regarding how to stop the dog from trying to over- enthusiastically sniff a treat out of your hand before they've done the action you're asking for....
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Happy Gotcha Day to Indie. Good luck with the training Are you on facebook Lorraine?
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Aha! I see you are Lorraine! You should ask to join Edward's Gotcha Gang
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Congratulations to you and Indie on finding each other. She sounds lovely.
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Hi Lorraine, so thrilled for you and your family for finding Indie, it was meant to be Enjoy her and keep us posted on her progress. Any pictures, how old is she? xx
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Good news and a happy ending for all. Re taking the treat - put treat in closed fist, Indie will sniff, scrabble at it but the moment she takes her face away, say 'leave' and good girl, then open your hand and say 'take it'. Gradually lengthen the time after she has withdrawn from the treat before you say 'take it. It's easier done with a clicker

Big congratulations on your new Labrador family member xxx
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Sorry for taking so long to reply folks. I'll have to work out how to post photos then will get some on - I have lots to choose from! Indie is still doing well, although I have to keep reminding myself that she has only been with us for two weeks so still has some settling to do (and I mean that in a good way - I wonder whether she might get more cheeky and start seeing what she can get away with as she gains her confidence - what do you think??) She is quite timid around other dogs (not surprising given her history!) and seems to want to be friends but approaches them then quickly scuttles back to us. We live in a rural location so we can walk for an hour and not see another dog which obviously doesn't help with socialisation. I do intend to take her to training classes but wanted to give her six weeks or so to settle properly, then I worry that lots of dogs might be too much for her. Decisions, decisions! Kate - I was reading about your rescue dog and Indie sounds a bit similar. We were told that she was wary of men and although she bonded with my husband very quickly and shows absolutely no fear of him, our male neighbour came in the house a few days ago and she appeared very nervous around him . I got him to feed her a few treats and will ask other male friends to do the same and also not to approach her but let her go to them in her own time - hopefully over time this might help. . Do you have any other advice? Charlie - she is 4 years old We think she is a lab/golden retriever cross rather than full lab. Stacia - thanks for the treat advice. I'll let you know how I get on! Ooh hubby has just turned up with curry, gotta go!!!
