Vet nurse rang me and I described what had happened today and in the last few weeks. She asked me lots of questions and said as you guys are saying - could be a food intolerance or something like giardia (thank you Boogie as had never heard of this before). Anyway I have just been to collect a sample pot, pro-kolin and some Hills prescription Diet food for today and tomorrow. Red has been very lethargic so far today and just lying in her crate dozing. I need to get this sorted - it must be horrible for her.
Thank you Selina and meant to mention Plum's Mum earlier. Hope I haven't missed thanking anyone who has commented.
Just a few further observations - after the horrible diarrhoea this morning and an extremely long sleep - Red has had the pro-kolin, eaten some of the food from the Vets and been outside for another clear - out - so I have the sample now to take in Monday. She has been chasing her tail a lot and scratching (I know she hasn't fleas she had Prinovox applied Thursday). Feeling frustrated as I doubt we will get out today except in the garden.
It has some wormer in it but not for all - Red has Endogard but although she is due her monthly dose, I daren't give it her until we have got over this horrible bout of diarrhoea
If she's had a wormer she may get an upset tum if she's had prinovox with a wormer that maybe it ? Sorry I didn't really understand your last post you said she prinovox applied Thursday? In a previous post
I used the liquid Prinovox on the back of her neck on Thursday which is done monthly. I haven't used the Endogard yet which is due but until this diarrhoea is sorted (which has been going on all day), I won't.
Liquid prinovox spot on is a wormer as well as a flea treatment. it treats fleas mites and worms Inc lungworms
Make sure she drinks plenty - a little honey mixed in the water gets them drinking xx Get well soon Red. ,,
Yes sorry SwampDonkey, I don't think I wrote that post very well - I know Prinovox is for lungworms as well as fleas. She needs the Engogard for hookworms and tapeworms etc but won't give her that until she is better.
Than you Boogie. She has drunk well today but will remember the honey tip. She is sleeping now and I hope we are going to have a good night after such a lot of diarrhoea. Has been an upsetting day. DH has had a nice play with her this evening - even Sky (older dog) joined in a bit. Really need to get this stomach thing sorted out - hope sample when tested may show a way forward.
Hope you have a good night and Red recovers soon. It must be very distressing for her and for you too.
About 10 o'clock last night, Red cried out (we had just gone up to bed). I rushed down (there was a spot of diarrhoea on her bed); we rushed outside and she had horrible diarrhoea. She went back happily into her crate and I set the alarm for 1.30 as she had been having diarrhoea approx every 3 hours during the day. We went outside - she had a wee, then diarrhoea again. Back into her crate quietly and this morning when we got up at 6.00, her crate was clean. We went outside but she had to say good morning to DH first (he appeared in kitchen a few moments after me), she had a wee. Back in for food the Vets gave, then straight outside - massive pool of mucus brown diarrhoea. So that's 24 hours of diarrhoea now and she has had 3 of the 5 doses of pro-kolin. Will see how today go but will be definitely be off to the Vets tomorrow. She is now sitting quietly on her bed. I have given her a bowl of water with a bit of honey in it as she hasn't drunk yet and I know she needs a lot of water.. This is horrible and can't help wondering what has caused all this.
Poor Red. Perhaps the vet will have the results of the sample tomorrow, but if it continues today and she isn't drinking it would be worth contacting the vet before then in case she needs to be put on a drip to avoid dehydration. Wispa had something similar nearly four years ago but was very lethargic and sick as well, so spent nearly a week on a drip. We never did discover what had caused it.
Thank you Granca. I will have to phone the vet first thing to arrange for the sample to go in for testing and for Red to be seen so I doubt there will be results so quick but I don't know. Yes I will monitor the drinking closely today and if necessary phone the emergency vet.
So sorry this seems to be dragging on for you & Red, it's very exhausting for you both. Hope the stool sample can shed some light on it. If you can take a plus out of it - she's letting you know she needs to go NOW - pretty good.
Yes that is the amazing thing - she has let us know every time so far which is a real plus, bless her
For help with drinking, I use chicken flavoured water - just plain water with chicken breasts boiled in it - nothing else added. I only give a little bit at a time, because Lucky drinks it all at once! I hope Red feels better soon!
Well Red has had 4 little meals of her 6 today as advised by the vet nurse and her two lots of pro-kolin. She is certainly hungry so her appetite has not been affected and she likes the food the Vets provided. She is drinking but not as much as I think she should. No diarrhoea since mid morning. I have just been outside with her - initially for a play as she seemed keen to go out and then thought I'd have a go at some of our training minus any treats. I know the diarrhoea has depleted her but she was still up for tearing around the garden so did a bit of recall, sitting, going down etc etc. She responded really well and instead of treats, I used my voice more animatedly to praise her and she seemed happy and not bothered a food reward wasn't coming. Later if she is up to it we will take her out and she can have a walk/run but all rewarding will have to be through voice and praise. Hope I can get her stomach/gut issues sorted quickly. It's very worrying when your dog is unwell, isn't it?
