I'm sorry if there are already similar threads on this, it was difficult to search for!

Tess spends most of her time with me because I am at home most of the day and I do many short training sessions with her each day. Her recall is (I think!) pretty good, though of course it's not proofed away from the home yet. Today the cat managed to get herself on to a log in the middle of the garden and Tess was running around her barking and bowing down, I called 'Tess Come' from the other end of the garden and she ran straight to me :) I can call her from one room of the house to another etc. and she'll come rushing in .... however, she won't come at all for my husband! He has quite selective hearing and often doesn't do things with Tess as I've explained to him and of course his voice is different, he doesn't do quiet commands very well and he's not very high pitched (although Tess did nip him in the crotch this week and he was quite high pitched then!). I've asked him to only give the recall command when she's already running towards him - is it usual to be in different places with training for different people?!!

    Ah, erm, yeeeees ;D

Many of us forum members are the main, active trainer in the house, and have a variety of anecdotes about what has happened between the dog and the other, less consistent, members of the family. Sometimes we see the funny side, sometimes not so much, if our training is being sabotaged ::)

My own dog has entirely individual standards for each separate person she encounters and shows very little sign of generalising her behaviour between people as she gets older (she's nearly two). If anything, the gap gets wider. Sigh! You can but try though, if OH takes your advice you're in with a good chance. :)

Haha, ok, glad it's normal - and I suppose it shows that my hard work is paying off at least! I'm quite glad if she doesn't listen to everybody else having spent a night away with family last night and suffered their various ways of getting her not to jump up and their compulsion to make her sit!!

Should I try to get him to do the same exercises with her that I do, only the less advanced versions?!

Rest assured that you're not alone!!! If you can encourage him to be involved in the training that'd be great. When we got our dog my hubby took him for our first obedience class and it nearly killed me to watch. But by the end of the 2 month course my hubby understood much better what training was about. Thought it took another two years to explain to him how to not ruin our dog's recall.....

He does try but it often doesn't work out very well :p I do want him to be able to walk Tess sometimes though so hopefully he'll stick with it :) It's funny because when we had our last dogs they were really his and he did most of the looking after them. I guess I just see more of Tess, I'm the one who reads forums and books all the time and of course I feed her!

I've been conditioning Tess to the whistle by giving her recall sound before I feed her. She gets it now and hangs back, waits for the whistle then comes forward for her food. Today I 'let' hubby do it. He did a very bizarre whistle then walked towards her with the food and gave it to her!!

My 9 year old son, on the other hand, is a total star! He's always coming to me and saying 'daddy said come to Tess when she wasn't already walking towards him' or 'daddy told Tess to sit then didn't make sure he did it AND he said it 3 times!'. He also gets very excited when I tell him the new things Tess can do ;D

We split the training between us and did all the dog training classes together. OH does the weekday local walks and I do the longer weekend walks. We usually do a short evening lead walk together.

Most of the time we're consistent with commands and behaviour so Holly ignores us both equally.

Lol, the only time we'll be able to do it together is when we take our 4 children with us which of course we will but not every day. He also works very long hours so he just isn't here a lot of the time. I don't know if we'll both go to the training classes - they said to bring the whole family but you get a little more than you bargained for with our lot!

I really really rally really really hope that the not generalising thing is true. Because if a dog can't be expected to understand that you saying something when you're standing up is the same as you saying it sitting down, then maybe, just maybe, they won't think that someone else saying something thirty times means that they have to wait until the thirtieth time of ME saying something to do it....

Hmmm. I may have had one too many G&Ts before typing that. Not my best use of the English language ;)

Tatze loves to lick out my husband's ears and between his toes :p and is actively encouraged to do so - bleugh! She never tries to lick me or anyone else. If I ask for a 'kiss' on the nose she will oblige.

Gypsy knows to ignore people completely, even if they click at her, lunge for her to stroke her or make squeaky noises - when she's working in her jacket. At home she is just as hard work as any Lab when visitors come, lots of reminders needed not to jump up, distractions etc to stop her mobbing them.

I think dogs are very situational :)

My OH and I love each other - but we are the kind of couple that cannot work together. Thank god for satnavs, because there is no way our relationship would survive the one person drive and the other map read thing. You know the kind of people, the ones that can't even agree where to put the tool box down when tackling a simple diy job. That's us. ;D

Honestly, we are terrible. We don't even stack the dishwasher in front of each other.....I've been known to say "can you leave the kitchen so I can do the dishwasher?".

But when we got Charlie, we forgot and attempted to "do things together". Mad. Why did we think that was going to work? ;D ;D ;D

So we do our own thing with Charlie, poor dog. I will sometimes risk a request "remember we don't say hello to other dogs on lead" or "how about we don't give him a biscuit when he's whining? hmmm?" but that's about it.

Charlie seems to cope though. Amazingly, he even understands some of OH's cues - which is "Charlie" but said eight completely different ways... ;D ;D ;D And OH's leave it cue, which is to flap his hands quickly while saying tish tish tish really does seem to work....

When we had a single dog, OH would take out the dog in the morning, then I would take Benson out later, it was in the summer and Benson was quite young, so not a great deal of walking was needed. I was solely in charge of training. Then, it became much tougher with 2 dogs.Taking the dogs out individually is out of the question, just too time consuming although I do manage now the days are longer to squeeze an extra walk into the day

To tackle very different training needs we take them out together, oh boy has this raised sparks! I end up very exasperated...goodness knows what other walkers think.....

Me "Casper just checked in then..."

    OH " Oh"

Me "You should click when he does that"..

    OH "hmmmm"

Me "Casper did it again...you missed it..."

OH " Can we please just go for a nice walk!"

    Casper..."I just checked in...can I have a biscuit.."

Nothing has tested our relationship quite like walking the dogs...wouldn't be without them..or him! :) :)

I mentioned that my hubby took Obi for his first training class and that it nearly killed me. Well, I am quite sure that our instructor thought that in fact I was going to kill my hubby... These posts are bringing it aaaallll back

Hah, Kate's post reminds me of trying to get my OH to reward check ins...only no way was he having a clicker (never again, since he used it as a noise distraction for Charlie sniffing dog poo ::) ::) ::) ). I got him to choose a verbal marker ("great") and then we proceeded exactly as Kate describes...exactly....

OH has just not got the whole mark the check-in thing, but he manages to hand out chicken - a little randomly - for Charlie sticking around, and it seems to do the trick.... ;D ;D ;D

OMG, I remember the click for poo sniffing incident. Majorly hilarious.

I have this - not with my husband, with my son! When he's home I have to leave the dishwasher to him - apparently there is only one 'right' way to do it :) ::)
