Sorry this is not the best of posts but I've noticed every so often Bella ( almost 6 months) has a string of what looks like / can only be described as as a string of yellow flem dripping from her bum / area she wees. I've wiped this off a couple of times and she's cleaned herself too , it doesn't appear to be causing her any issues and she's still going to the toilet without any problems , but just wondered if this is normal in pup bitches? ;D

Do you mean something more viscous than pee? If so, I'd go straight to the vet. Could be an infection. Does not sound normal to me.

Agree with Karen, anything that doesn't resemble normal pee should be discussed with the vet. It may help if you could take a sample with you. Hope all is well with Bella

Thanks, yes flem like. I had a google earlier and it mentions puppy vaginitis? That tends to just disappear once they've had their first season and nothing to worry about unless it's causing a few issues eg constant licking, toilet problems etc? It's not all the time just every week or so? Maybe I'll just give vet a call to see what they think?

It could be puppy vaginitis, Penny had this but she also had it alongside a tucked vulva so was getting an awful lot of urine infections.

I would get her checked out by a vet just to be on the safe side. One of the more dangerous causes of discharge from the vulva is pyometra (infection of the womb) which requires immediate surgery. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

I agree with Lauren, I would be calling the vet as Harley had pyometra and I wouldn't want anyone to go through what we did. I thought it was nothing much and wished I acted sooner.

It was awful she had just turned 1. It was 5 weeks after her season ended - she had a bad season - bled for over 4 weeks. I took her to the vets for a lump on her head when my daughter mentioned she had seen a bit of discharge the day before. The vet checked Harley over and took her into surgery within the hour. It was a good job we went in - the vet said if we hadn't she wouldn't of been with us the following day. Because of this I am very, very wary of any discharge on any female dogs.

Oh dear how awful but pleased you got her sorted. Right I'll get her in early next week. Not sure I'll have a sample as only happens on occasion but a full check over would be good.

I think in young dogs a vaginal discharge is fairly 'normal' in that many young bitches have it, mine certainly did. However, any discharge in a bitch needs investigating when older because of the dreaded pyometra which is 'pus in the uterus'.

Nonetheless, I would strongly advise you to call the vet ASAP.

    Re: Discharge ....

Thanks all. Took her to the vets, he said it probably is puppy vaginitis but gave her an anti flam injection as her vulva was a bit red/sore. He wants us to go back tomorrow with a water sample to rule anything else out...,this will be fun, if she goes indoors I'll have a better chance but need something to suck it up?!?

If he thinks a course of antibiotics is necessary he'll prescribe. He also mentioned that her vulva is more pronounced in structure and having her first season wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing as may help develop things but on the other hand repeat infections would not be good and he would then recommend a spay, so we just have to play it by ear.

51 quid spent for a 15 minute chat and injection and more tomorrow...but she's worth it ;D

A tinfoil pie tray, or similar, is useful to catch the required sample ;) Hope the injection does the trick and she has no more problems :)

Re the collection of wee, if you can use a shallow dish , a plastic food tray , then when she squats , slide it under her very quickly, then retreat to the bathroom to wash your hands :) Poor little love, hopefully the cream will help a lot and she will soon be all better x
