We've had a lovely morning in the New Forest swimming at our favourite spot East Boldre. It's taken a while to get Riley swimming but it's nice and shelving here so he doesn't have to be too bold.

As he comes out of the water he gets distracted and starts walking along the boundary staying in the shallows. Should I just put my trainers on and start moving quickly away from him as he gets to the boundary or is there something else I should try? He also seems to feel a massive urge to pee after each swim which, when he does come out of the water, sometimes means a detour to the nearest gorse bush before delivery ::)

I`m sure someone more experienced will be better able to answer Barbara, but if it were me , I would just take a few steps away to encourage him to come straight out to you x

To be honest straight deliveries in anything other than a corridor are pretty hit and miss right now. He seems to want to mark anything and everything and still gets over excited and does the occasional lap to prove how brilliant he is ::)

I've taken all the toggles off and tried to fix the flaps down on our dummies as when he picks them up by the ends it seems to make him worse.

I'm wondering about starting again from scratch with a clicker retrieve but whenever I see a trainer they don't seem too worried and say that he'll get better if we just stick at it.....big sigh!

Frustrating, isn't it. Lady will retrieve out of water reasonably, but if she has to cross water the crossing bit goes ok, but she comes back via the nearest foot bridge even if it's several hundred yards away.

I feel your big sigh Barbara , Sam always comes straight back to me but he wont always hand over the goods ::)
David , Sam also does that, always comes back the driest route , the excitement drives him in but his dislike of water makes him cautious coming back through it, funny bunnies arent they ::)

Charlie just launches himself off all fours straight into the river and doesn't want to come out ;D ;D You and Riley will get it right eventually Barbara as you always do with all your hard work. Keep going. :D Helen x
