Sam has always enjoyed his naps ;D There was a time, not so long ago when I wondered if there was maybe something wrong with him as he spends a lot off time dozing , I took him to my lovely Vet for a check up , he rolling his eyes at Paul behind my back and giving the wink that said so much , another paranoid owner ;) ;)
When we are out, he exercises hard , no sedate walks for Sam ( or Millie for that matter ) and despite being in my dotage , I do romp on at a pace , we do lot of climbing up steep rocky hills , lots of stretching out on the beach and lots of training exercises along the way . This is twice a day and also , when weather permits , they are both out in the garden, sometimes charging around playing, but in between , he sleeps and sleeps and sleeps , quite the lazy bones .
Vet says he is in perfect health and although such a huge boy, he carries no fat so I guess he gets enough exercise , he has always been like this since we first had him , just the very odd manic moment but on the whole he prefers to lie on his bed chucking out the Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz `s .

Sounds like Sam has the perfect life - having fun or fast asleep, and no nonsense in between! ;D

Simba sleeps a lot too. He gets three walks a day, but mainly on lead, unless I can manage a visit to the dog park, which I try to do at least 2x a week. We do some training indoors, not as much as I should, to be honest, and he is free to go out in the yard when he wants to, a few times a day.

So, I'm sure he could use with a little more exercise/mental stimulation but we all do the best we can, right?

Too right we do Lisa , I guess I am fortunate, being retired and having lots of free running places close by , I guess he must be happy with the exercise he gets as its mental and physical , he is just a lazy bones in between :)

My dogs sleep away any hours that do not involve something they enjoy (e.g. hunting, retrieving or eating) The Labradors sleep more deeply than the spaniels, who live in hope that something may be just about to happen :)

My previous dog slept a lot - about twice as much as a human. Even Obi sleeps all day if we are not doing anything interesting.

Sam sounds normal to me :)

Lilly spends all day sleeping unless there is the potential of scooping some food, or getting a walk.

It does them no harm to be ignored Lynne as we all have things to do. I believe you can do too much with dogs and then they just bug you for more, it's just the same as if you walk them for 3 hours every day that's what they then need. Dogs are a bit like children and need quiet time and SO DO WE ;D

thanks helen,.....i do need to change things,....he as been given to much attention, i think may be with being my first dog i have tried to hard, huh and made mistakes along the way, putting to much effort into getting things perfect,.....the recall was my biggest challenge ......hey ho we are going from strength to strength with that, he can even be on the same field as other dogs now, i just say come on your with me and we can go on are way without him legging it over to them.....he is a softy, my fault, i have allowed it, i have never shut the back door on him, so now i cant shut the door when he is out ....he is good company, my little star :)

Lynne, I think dogs can expand to fill all the time you are prepared to give them... you haven't gone wrong or made mistakes along the way. Training him, teaching him to be a well socialised and well-behaved dog isn't getting anything wrong now, is it??! And it's because you have invested all that time in him and got him to that stage, that he will be perfectly well adjusted if you need to crate him / leave him for periods of time and just get on with other stuff. He'll doze until there's something else going on...

And I'm sure he really is great company. Our dogs all do a brilliant job of being there for all of us :) :)

Re: Do your dogs sleep a lot during the day ?

thank you clare .....i took him out of the crate at 4 months old, i took a gamble as i gave him free run of the lounge and kitchen ;)i
i was lucky when i left him he did not chew, just munched the cushions, ....now i remove the cushions, well hidden in a cupboard, when i leave him .....i do have a baby gate between the lounge and the kitchen, when i am doing jobs i do put him behind the gate, only for short periods ,
my home is very quiet, with only me home alone most of the day,....no back ground noise, .....i sit in the kitchen during the day by the back door,i he was toilet trained within 5 days, .....he sits in the doorway every morning for an hour, why i freeze,...my fault,....having had 3 children and running a business, that was easy :)
jasper as been the biggest challenge i have ever had,.....all i want is a well behaved boy :)
    we will get there,.... ;D
he don't sleep during the day, he is frightened to miss any thing or i talk to much to him :)

Reuben has always insisted on his deep naps ...

... We just wish he wouldn't insist taking them on our unmade bed.
