    At that point he usually stills runs over to the other dogs like a freight train

    Now that sounds familiar!! ::)

    Re: does any one use one of these , figure 8 dog halter , head collar and lead,

    I have found it really difficult to lead train to heel. I managed it to get Digby walking nicely besides me when there was no disctraction. I have been trying (all along and he is 8 months now) to not let him just pull me for a sniff to the verge/a post etc. And then giving him a release command when I get to an area I am happy for him to have a sniff around. This seems to be finally sinking in (mostly). I clicker trained him past people just whilst out and about - he used to pull to get to everyone. I started by crossing the road and having as big a distance as possible and he will now walk without pulling past a person (I do try and have myself between him and whoever though). Children are more challenging but I found the clicker worked brilliantly for this. Walking past dogs remains a whole other matter.
    I recently started a training class and the trainer suggested a body harness with a fastening at the back and on the chest. He walks a treat on it and its LOADS better if he pulls - don't feel like he's strangling himself. He will walk past the other dogs at training class now which is an improvement. He will still pull towards dogs whilst we are out. The harness does help me (not very large) control a strong and weighty dog, but I know its the training alone which will stop the pulling. I'm plodding on, try to distance myself from dogs as much as possible, I have tried just stopping still whilst the other dog passes but have found this often results in the other owner bringing their dog over to say hello - reinforcing the pulling ::)
    Ultimately we are all doing our best - Digby is my first dog and there is no way I'm not going to make loads of mistakes and inadvertently train in bad stuff as well as good..but hey, I know I am putting more thought in it than my parents did with their dog when I was a child....the information now available on line, and forums like this just weren't available.

    If you find some secret solution to the "pulling to other dogs" issue in the meantime then please share. :) Oh yeah, and the bounding up to everyone like a long lost best pal, and pinching socks at any given opportunity, and barking at my neighbours (only one particular neighbour though??), and a wet nose shoved in everyone's crotch, and rolling in fox poo......I could go on all day ;D

    You sound like you're doing all the right things....some distractions take longer to train for than others :) Riley will walk past people no worries but other dogs are still tooooooo exciting and we're still working on it at the grand old age of two.

    As for the sock stealing...no hope there:

    I am surprised by how many people let Amy jump up, I tell her no etc. They say its ok, she just a puppy or its ok I don't mind! They will mind when she is big and covered in fox poo!

    that's a cute picture Barbara, Digby however eats the socks he takes given half the chance...vigilance required.

    there's nothing quite like that fox poo stench.

    I frequently find myself calling out "Don't pat her she's rolled in something stinky!!" to random strangers. ;D ;D
