Im getting a bit worried, as Otis has these tiny little yellow things that are burrowing into his skin and causeing him to itch. I see the vet on Friday (PDSA) for his first vaccine and hope to get something from them then. In this warm weather its not a great thing for him to have, and I have some puppy medicated shampoo that I was going to give him a bath in in the meantime. Will also have to wash his bedding of course. Has anyone idea what thay are ? Should I be worried ? He seems quite happy otherwise, Im keeping him cool, and he has been playing in the garden. Any help much appreciated, THANKS, Maggie
Re: Does Otis have mites ? Hi Maggie. Couple of questions for you re the things you can see. Firstly, where are they on his body and how big are they in millimetres? Can you post a photo showing them? Most mites are microscopic so you can't see them with the naked eye, but you could see fleas (dark brown), lice or ticks, and possibly harvest mites although it's a bit early in the year for them and they are more orange-red than yellow. I would hesitate to use a shampoo before going to the vets as all too commonly all the evidence of what is going on disappears down the sink leaving your vet in the dark! Hope this helps
Re: Does Otis have mites ? Damn ! I just washed him, thinking I was doing the right thing. They are about less than a millimetre long, tiny. Think they are like a yellow colour. Sorry haven't figured out how to use the photo thing one here, and my camera couldn't photograph something so tiny. They look like they are burrowing into his skin, I thought he just had dandruff ! Thankyou so much for your help, much appreciated. Maggie
Re: Does Otis have mites ? Hmmm from this description it might just be tightly adherent skin scales visible attached to the opening of the hair follicles. Cheyletiella mites are known as "walking dandruff" but usually are on the back and do not burrow into the skin. Could be a crop of seed ticks I suppose. Can you see them moving at all? And have they disappeared after the bath?
Re: Does Otis have mites ? He has these little tiny scabs all over him, that brush away too, cant see anything now hes been bathed, they did move, (lice ??) . It was my friend who spotted them this morning, on his tummy. He is still scratching, so not sure the bath did much good. Hes eating okay, and is quite happy I think, its only his second day with me, so still settleing in. Thankyou again, Maggie
Re: Does Otis have mites ? Hi Maggie Possibilities are myriad. However, if you've just got him what was he bedded on before you got him? Itchy and small scabs sounds a bit like staw mites, not very often encountered these days but don't fret, easily fixed just needs diagnosis first. Kerryn
Re: Does Otis have mites ? Hi Maggie, Dexter was really chewing at his feet ,I couldn't see anything but when I went to the vet she showed me the skin right inbetween his toes and there were these tiny, tiny specks of orange, like grains of sand which were diagnosed unsurprisingly as Sand Mites!Mum in the Uk ( we live in the desert!)had never heard of them but she did say another word for something similar in the UK which could have been what some of the other replies have been.It was really easily treated with a Frontline spray and I do a preventative spray every week......don't worry,it will be easily fixed, are you really enjoying him?Did he like his bath? X
Re: Does Otis have mites ? Hi Thanks for all your help. Vets tomorrow so will get it sorted then. I think he did quite enjoy his bath, cooled him down a bit as it was so hot and muggy yesterday. He is a lovely pup, was worried that he was a bit quiet, and then he started jumping about being a real bundle of fun in the garden, so no problem there. He is a real snuggler loves cuddling upto me which is great, so pleased I got him. Maggie
