HI Guys , Have just started taking Milo training and i wanted to cry. I can't believe the well trained dog i have at home(well i thought so) would not obey me once i thought he would be the star pupil. Too many distractions with other dogs. Just asking anyone been in same situation should i give up or does it get better?OR labradors have there own mind Milos 8 mths now
Re: Dog training Keep at it. They are super distracted at first, but they soon get used to the idea that they are there to work, not play. It really helps later on with ignoring other dogs when on lead, as they practice that a lot in class!
Re: Dog training Labrador puppies really should come with a warning label "I will make you cry the first time you take me to puppy class". ;D ;D ;D And another one "and it'll be even worse when I'm a teenager". They are excitable, confident, boisterous, over friendly dogs. It does get better. As Mags says, just stick at it.
Re: Dog training I would think it is always like this! I can promise it does get better - eventually Keep going to the class if it is a good one, learning will be taking place even if it doesn't appear to be doing so!
Re: Dog training DEFINITELY keep going to the class!!! Milo will learn that there is a difference between work (at class) and play with other dogs at different times. Gosh, when I think back to when we started at class when Poppy was 8 months old, I was embarrassed by her lack of self control!!! Actually, a couple of weeks ago I was at a training class, and met a woman from my very first class. She was amazed at how steady and calm Poppy is now - she reminded me how different it was two years ago!!! So keep at it and don't get downhearted.
Re: Dog training I know how you feel, but you will get there I promise . I was looking back at when Sam was about 6/9 months old , out off lead and refusing point blank to come to me, preferring to carry on playing with his dog friends , the pulling on lead that had me at my wits end at times to the point of tears , we`ve all been there with these over exuberant bundles of energy , but it will pay off if you stick at it
Re: Dog training It will get better! Look on it like proofing the things he can do perfectly at home - it's just the next stage of the training process
Re: Dog training It's a big contrast to go from training on your own in a familiar place to training in an incredibly distracting and exciting environment like a class. Your experience was totally normal But it will all definitely get better and Milo will eventually be capable of doing in class what he can do at home It really helps to practise in environments that are partway or halfway between home and class, in terms of distraction factors - so, at a local park for example. Try to think up ideas for places you can practice that are more distracting than home, but not quite as full on as class, before your next class. And in those distracting environments go back to basics a little. Start with some easier stuff and gradually build up to the harder things. Hang in there
Re: Dog training At Guide Dog puppy classes they are 90% Labs or Lab crosses - it's mayhem! (But the best fun ever!) At least we don't feel bad as they are all at it!! Look at those two in the background lol.
