Tiffy is coming along great now, except for fireworks. New query please as this is all new to me. She has just come into season and I don't know if this is her first or not. I do not want her to have pups and will have her speyed in 3/4 months. I drive her to an area where I can exercise her ( only on the lead now )so as not to leave a scent trail. She is in a pretty secure garden and I have built a secure porch and kennel. I know that this will last for 3 weeks plus and would welcome any advice on the subject. One problem is that she now smells strongly metallic which I find slightly nauseating. Is there anything I can use to mask it to some degree?

Hi , I cant say that I have ever noticed a strong smell with a bitch in heat, does Tilly clean herself well / if so then I guess it could be the smell of blood on her breath that you notice . Although many bitches have a season lasting for 3 weeks , some are a little longer, my own bitch had her season last September, it lasted good 26 days , so best err to caution . The actual period where the bitch is willing to allow mating is towards the middle of the second week , she will sometimes act like a complete tart , actively looking for a mate , so yes, lead walks at all times is the safest way . Tilly may be a little more clingy during season , also may pee a little more and lose her appetite , all normal .
You`re right, best time for a spay is 3 months after the end of the season , I had my bitch spayed at the beginning of January , its now 4 weeks post spay and the scar is already fading , the worst part of the recovery period was trying to keep her calm :)

Yes I think you are right, Tiffy does clean herself a lot so it probably is the smell of blood on her breath I am getting. I suppose more dental chews are the answer.
