Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? It should be neither a lab nor a flat coat but a Clumber spaniel! ;D That was the preferred gundog of the aristocracy in that period! Plus my friend is the game keeper at Highclere castle where Downton is filmed and she owns and works Clumbers on the estate. So why they chose a yellow lab I really don't know.
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? Probably because she wouldn't let them loose with her gorgeous spaniels! ;D
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? As an aside , I read an interview with Hugh who plays Lord Grantham , the interviewer asked him how he managed to get the Lab to walk at heel , he replied that he had sausages in his pocket on every take x
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? A black Lab would've been more accurate than a yellow one. We always love catching a glimpse of the dog
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? My OH looks a lot like Hugh Bonneville (he hates that though...) - but especially when walking his yellow lab to heel! With or without sausages in his pocket :
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? I think English Pointers were also favoured during that period x I have never watched Downton Abbey and I only live 10 minutes away from Highclere Castle which is stunning xx
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats?
Charlie would look right at home at Highclere...
Oh yes I can see us now Karen, me standing outside my stately home with Charlie looking so regal and poised for our next royal shoot, then getting Cook to make us game pie ;D Oops I've woken up back to reality on with the washing up!! : xx
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats?
We always love catching a glimpse of the dog
Ah we do too x
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? I just love the lab in Downton - it always reminds me of the show when I see M following my OH around the house I sent the article to my sister, who used to have a Flatcoat. She reckoned it would have been a no-brainier for the director if he had any idea about dogs - for all our experiences of insanity in labs, the potential for carnage with a flatcoat is much greater ;D ;D ;D
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? I know one and it's nasty and the other is a puppy in our village pub who is so sweet x
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? If anyone visits Highclere don't forget to visit the exhibition in the basement. It is about the discovery of King Tut's (no way will I attempt the spelling) tomb. Highclere is the ancestral home of Lord Carnarvon who sponsored the expedition. When you see the conditions they worked in it is amazing they found anything.
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? Gosh, I didn't know that about Highclere and Lord Carnarvon! I know quite a few flat coats - most of them very well trained, as they compete in working tests. But their owners agree that they are clowns, and not the easiest to train! Yesterday I met two brown flat coats, and a couple of weeks ago I met a golden flat coat - didn't know there was such a thing! But apparently the yellow colour is not breed standard, and they try not to breed from dogs who carry the yellow gene. Sounds like a fashion thing to me, nothing to do with health of the dogs. I must say, the golden flat coat was stunning, to my eyes.
Re: Downton Abbey - labs or flats? Don't flat coats, labs and goodies all come from the same breeds originally? No surprise then that you could end up with a yellow flattie ;-) The liver ones are beautiful! We have a lovely black girl round our way, she's an absolute sweetheart.
