Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day Poppy is a gorgeous girl . I hope she is feeling better after a good nights sleep. I have all this to come over the next few months!
Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day What wonderful pictures - Poppy is so sweet-looking. Hope she is back to her normal self tomorrow
Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day She is absolutely beautiful! Having a male dog, not quite sure what happens during a phantom pregnancy. I'm just glad her operation went well and she is snug at home. How is Poppy doing today?
Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day I was wondering the same too , hope Poppy is alright today ? Paige , a phantom pregnancy in a bitch can be very distressing, it usually starts within a few weeks after the end of a season . The bitch is convinced that she is pregnant and her body behaves as though she is too , my girl even had loads of milk . They often become possessive of soft toys , treating them like pups and some can even become aggressive too , poor things are in turmoil and in extreme cases like Millie was, the kindest thing is a well timed spay to put an end to it once and for all

I watched Paul O'Grady's dog programme at Christmas (I can't remember the name for the life of me) and a husky was having a phantom pregnancy but she just had a few teddies in her bed. I had no idea that some dogs bodies think they're pregnant too.

Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day That is good to hear Looking forward to seeing more pics of your lovely girl.
Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day Update: On Thursday night poppy was out of it, she noticed the chicken cooking and watched the oven for a while. Poppy would open her eyes if I said her name although she was not really there if you know what I mean: She had a few small pieces of chicken but would not drink any water at all. A quick google suggests that dogs not wanting water after anaesthetic is normal so that was a relief as she had not had a drink all day. Later on Thursday evening poppy snuggled up on the sofa with my wife. Poppy was really out of it and was spaced out. Poppy was bleeding slightly from her incision which was a worry, more googling suggested that weeping was normal for the first 24 hours so not too concerned. Dabbed it with a few clean dressings until it stopped, there was line of blood along the cut so not sure exactly where it was coming from as poppy not keen to let me near it. Poppy would not settle at night, walking around the house like a lost lamb. She wanted to go to her upstairs bed beside our bed as she does every night but when carried there she wanted to be downstairs again after a few minutes, would not settle anywhere as she did not like to lie down as probably uncomfortable. I decided to spend the night on the sofa looking after poppy as she would happily sit in her usual place on the sofa. It was a long night, poppy fell to sleep occasionally but I didn't as watching her all night until about 7am when my wife took over and I went for 2 hours sleep. On Friday morning Poppy was still quiet and would not really settle, walking around and not able to find a comfy place to lie down, would not go in her bed and just stood looking sad with back legs wide apart. Hardly eaten anything for her breakfast and turned her nose up at chicken and still would not drink water. I put her slip lead on as that calms her down because otherwise she was pacing around the house. She did eventually lie down under a chair and stayed there most of the day. Every time I went near her she would walk away and find somewhere else to hide underneath, On Friday afternoon my wife had to go out for a while as there was a family funeral, I could not go as dare not leave poppy. Poppy did not even bother as my wife left, normally poppy would hear the noise of keys and want to go and if not would cry for a while as she misses my wife although is OK after a few minutes. when my wife returned Poppy heard the sound of keys in the front door and I said to Poppy 'Who is it ?' like I always do and for the first time in what seems like days poppy was excited and waited for my wife to walk in the kitchen and then did her full body wag for a few seconds. That was a happy moment as wife was a bit sad as you can imagine. Poppy soon back to sulky though. We decided to check on poppy's incision to see if it looked OK as not yet checked it that day for some reason, probably too tired to think. The incision was perfectly stitched at the top and was tightly together along most of it but at the bottom there was a slight gap where it had been bleeding. As it was 5pm on Friday and only an hour before the vets closed at 6pm so I decided to phone the vets for advice. The vets said to bring her in to be checked to put our minds at rest. That was easier said then done, as soon as we set off poppy did her best to try to get out of the car like a mad thing. When we got there she was OK and walked into the vets OK but vets treatment room was a different story, it was the same room we left her at the day before, maybe she thought we where going to leave her again. The nurse had a look and it was a little bit open but nothing to worry about as long as kept clean and no licking. There was no way Poppy would have let anyone do anything to her anyway so off home we went. Poppy did not like the lampshade/ buster collar as it made her hot and still not drinking any water which is more than 24 hours now without drinking: A picture of the poppy encouraged to roll over for inspection: A closer look by cropping part of that picture, not very good quality but you can see the little openings at the left hand end of the incision, you can see why we where worried. ------------ On Friday night at bedtime we left poppy in her crate with the lampshade hoping she would settle but she would not lay down, She just sat there looking sad as every time the lampshade touched the crate it startled her. She was hot and bothered and making mouth noises like she was thirsty but would not drink from her water bowl even though she watched me change the water which normally encourages her to drink. I had the idea of making some chicken flavoured water. In her food bowl I put a few pieces of roast chicken and topped it up with slightly warm water and mixed it up a bit. I took her lamp shade off although she turned her nose up at the 'chicken water' probably because I was watching. I left her to it and sure enough she lapped it up. The first drink for about 36 hours as it was now about 02:30 in the morning. I put her lampshade back on and rather than crating her I put her dog blanket on the floor in the lounge and decided I would stay with her again in the lounge. She sat on her blanket but she would not lie down as did not know how to do it with a lampshade. I lay down beside her on her blanket and she leaned her weight against me, she was heavy and tired. After a few minutes of talking to her I gently pulled her front legs away saying 'lie down poppy' and she did and let out a happy groan as she relaxed on the floor beside me. That was great and she went to sleep quickly and I slept on the sofa again with a warm blanket as it was a cold night. At about 03:30 AM on Saturday morning I was woken by Poppy bashing me in the face with her lampshade, she was trying to lick my face and her tail was wagging with a full body wag. My Poppy was back !!! and I was so happy !!. I think the big drink of chicken water was the turning point that night. She then jumped up on the sofa and snuggled up beside me licking me just like when she was a small puppy. Not much room on a sofa for me and a Labrador wearing a lampshade so I let her sleep and I moved to the other sofa, Poppy had the best blanket but she was happy and asleep so that was OK. Saturday morning poppy had still not pooed but did wee in the garden so the chicken water had worked. On Saturday late morning I tool her for a short 10 minute walk to the end of the street to her favourite patch of grass to see if she would pooh, she did slightly which was good although not much. More later when I get chance to update about Saturdays progress with lots of pictures. We have had ups and downs but making progress I think.

Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day poor Poppy. Hopefully she is on the mend and you are getting some sleep Thank you for telling your story, it has really helped me understand and prepare for when we have Harley spayed.

Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day Oh bless her, looking so sad , but honestly, give her a couple more days and she will be raring to go , then the hard work starts in trying to hold her back , just been through this with our girl so I know how tough it is to see them like this
Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day Poor poppy. I know Labradors have an amazing ability to look sad but I don't think I've ever seen one look quite so sad and fed up as poppy. I'm glad she's feeling a bit better after the magic chicken water. Jen
Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day She has the most lovely face no wonder you have been in bits seeing her so out of sorts, she is gorgeous.i must admit to a smile as a fellow cone survivor....I had several nights on the couch scared to move with a Labrador asleep on top of me with a cone planted firmly on my cheek....you are so happy for the respite from the restlessness you daren't breathe! Sounds like she's truly on the mend, your account will help a lot of other owners I'm sure x
Re: Dropped Poppy off at the Vets to be Spayed - what a worrying day Poor little girl, she did have a rough time. My vet does a very small incision, about one inch in length. So pleased to read that she is feeling so much better, I lived every moment with her as you wrote :'(
