    Re: Ducklings

I just had a chat to the judge who said that the reason he awarded Solander over Christopher was because Solander is a bit bigger - but he expected that Christopher would end up the better bird once he grows and fills out a bit. So that was encouraging :)

Christopher is not even 5 months old yet. Christopher is already quite a bit bigger than his Dad was at the same age so I'm sure he will overtake him. They're like Labradors - they take time to muscle up.

They are doing the award ceremony now! Better go :)

Well done Solander! Well, good first time out Christopher, well done - good to hear you'll grow into a smasher.

    Hope you enjoyed it Racheal.

Love to hear how Marg got on, I loved those lovely long white necks on her ducks!

    Re: Ducklings

One of Marg's ducks got Best White Indian Runner Duck (female) so she was really happy with that. She has very nice birds and is usually always in the prizes. She cares for them very well.

In the awards ceremony Solander also got Best Rare Breed Waterfowl, which was a great surprise! He is thrilled, and Christopher is very proud of his Daddy.

The Royal Canberra Poultry Show is coming up on the 6th/7th June so I'll put them all in that too. Duyfken needs to go on a more restricted diet though it she's to go in as the judge today said she was too fat (this is despite having already been on a diet for the last two months...).

Hurrah! I liked the white ducks very much.

Well done Solander! Wow, if Christopher is going to be better when he's grown, he's going to be fantastic!

How awful for Duyken to be called fat! Poor girl. I'm sure it's just a touch of pea retention. How on earth do you put a duck on a diet! They all scrabble for the peas!

    Re: Ducklings

To put her on a diet I have to reduce her food and try to make sure she gets more exercise. It's hard because she lives with Solly who doesn't need a restricted diet....but she is greedy and a fast eater so she gets more than her share and he doesn't get enough. Might have to separate her and Solly for a bit so he gets enough and she gets less. Sigh!

    Well done :)
A diet sounds like it might be difficult, but I'm sure you will make it happen ;)

Yeah, they just love to eat. They think they are fattening up to fly south for the winter (although it'd be north here, technically)....

Christopher has had a fight with someone and lost because he has a tuft of feathers pulled out of his chest. I am pretty sure that his opponent was a chicken. Good thing it didn't happen before the show!

Will get some other photos up in the next couple of days :)
