  Oh my goodness, Rachel.....heart-stopping indeed.... Yes, I will take my 5' of snow over that snake any day!!!

Pippa had pasted an article awhile back about an "emergency word" that you train for but only use in these types of situations....this reminded me I need to go back and look at the article.....you never know when you are going to need it!

So will we be getting close-ups of the outdoor ducklings too?? Now that I've named one I want to see him/her up close!! :)

It was very scary....Really could do without the blimmin' snakes. Angela, time slowed down for me too. Even when your dog is not standing next to it, it is very frightening in a primal kind of way to see a snake nearby. Luckily, it was in an open area and the snake had an easy escape route - they do prefer to run, not fight. I was just afraid that Obi would try to pick it up. Anyway, all's well that ends well. Buying a rubber snake for proofing sounds line a great idea! :) And the magic word. And remembering to actually use my recall cue instead of generalised, incoherent screaming ::)

I'll get some individual pics of the outdoor ducklings too :) Might have to set it up outdoors as Lockyer will have a fit if I 'steal' them for an indoor photo shoot.

    Can empathise with that feeling.

Was getting all oo-ey and ah-ey over the ducklings then
    Calmed down myself now....

Meriwether is a right poser (aka gorgeous fluff-ball), but Woodget looks like he has a bit of attitude with the wet head ;D
Definitely agree Harrison has the rather refined and slightly effeminate look of a girly ;)

Thanks for humoring us all Rachael :)

The screaming thing is why I wonder if the emergency word will really work...not because of the word, but that in an emergency how likely is it that I would remember to use the word which I usually never use??

I think you'd need to do some visualisation training - repeatedly imagine the predator or toxic creature of your choice approaching while you calmly deliver your special recall cue.

Well, I have to apologise as I didn't manage to get any portrait pics of the outdoor ducklings today. My parents are visiting, so we're doing touristy stuff. Obi managed to wrangle a trip to the dog park, though, so here is a picture of a dirty (and slightly chubby, what with Christmas and all) Labrador to tide you over:

Obi is in a terrible mood because no-one commented on his photograph. I just said, princess, face it - the ducklings are cuter.

Not exactly portrait shots but here are Ariel and Temeraire enjoying some time in the little run attached to their house.

We went to an exhibition yesterday of old maps, showing the gradually developing European awareness (and therefore appearance on maps) of Australia. Several of the ducklings' names were mentioned - well, Christopher and Harrison were mentioned and two replicas of Harrison's chronometers were in the display. Very exciting!

And here they are saying hi to the others, who have now graduated to spending the daytime in this coop.

When they hopped off the step they're standing on, Ariel fell on his back and couldn't get up. Ducklings are roly poly that way. I help him get the right way up and scored myself a right pecking from Lockyer. Ungrateful hen that she is! :)

Ariel and Temeraire's bills have quite a bit of pink on them, but over time they should, hopefully, become mostly blue. Their mother had similar as a duckling.

Oh poor Obi. You look stunning in mud.

Was that the mapping our word display at the National Library? We are planning to go have a look this week. Did you enjoy it? We will also check out the lego display there too.

Those ducklings look super happy :)

Yes! that's the one, Mapping Our World. We thought it was excellent. Highly recommend it :) You have to book a time, but it's free.

And thanks so much for cheering Obi up - hopefully we've now seen the last of the dirty looks. ;)

Obi, darling, you know I wouldn't miss a photo if you. I had commented last night that you've applied the mud quite skilfully on your face - what do you call that make-up effect? But then I ran out of login and lost the comment.

The ducklings are very cute though, Obi...

    Barbara, Obi thanks Lizzie :)

Julie, I think he calls that particular look 'Outback Buffalo Hunter Splatter' or something to that effect. All I know is it took hours and he locked himself in the bathroom.
