Morning everyone We had another trial of Decrating Jack & Barney overnight last night. I cleared the room they sleep in of things they might steal or chew (or so I thought!) They were quiet until 6am this morning which is the best they've been out of the crate, but when I came down they had obviously been having a play for a while, as there was wAshing knocked off the ironing basket, and my gym socks which were on top of their crate were shredded on the floor. While clearing this up I realised the bits were only from one sock, and the other is missing. I presume one/both of them has eaten it! I'm pretty sure it will have been in bits like the other, as they've probably had a tug of war with them. It was a little trainer sock, so not very long. Do I just keep an eye on them over the next few days? I've read threads like this before but couldn't find any to check the advice. Thanks, Lou x
Re: Eaten a sock! If Rolo is anything to go by you will find the sock within the next few days sicked back up. It's still fair game once it's come back up tho! Rolo eats socks on a regular basis. We have a strict no sock downstairs policy but he still manages to sniff them out! He has only had one sock that returned via the back exit but he managed to pass it fine. Bless him. Keep your eyes peeled it will show up again.
Re: Eaten a sock! These stories frighten me because I know of a dog that died after eating a sock ,but I don't want to frighten you by writing that.I've heard so many more stories of the sock being sicked up or successfully 'processed' so im only mentioning it so you keep vigilant for any changes in them.....if you do straight to the vet,do not delay....and honestly they do always seem to reappear xxxx
Re: Eaten a sock! Lottie has eaten two socks (as far as I know!). The first was a small trainer sock which she brought up after a couple of days. The second (several weeks ago) was a normal black sock – this still hasn't reappeared (to my knowledge). Yesterday she ate a soft toy. I went to the vet for a vomit-inducing injection and she brought it up after an anxious 5 minutes, during which the vet said she might have to operate if it didn't come up. I would have thought a small trainer sock would come out one end or the other (but may take some days). The vet said there's only about a 2 hour window during which you can try to make them regurgitate something they've swallowed, so if it was me, I'd wait and see what happens, but definitely go straight to a vet if you have any worries.
Re: Eaten a sock! Panic over - the sock appeared from under the sofa! Phew!! They have eaten part of the other one tho, but I'm sure that was in relatively small pieces and the ankle cuff and toe part were still in one piece. Thanks for the advice, even tho we have had labs before its a long time since they were pups and I think you just forget things once they're out of the puppy stage.
Re: Eaten a sock! Glad to hear that the missing sock has been discovered and any other piece are "processed without incident". Juno has only eaten 1 sock and that was one of the thin trouser socks. I knew one was missing but thought the washing machine had swallowed it until Juno started to pass it on a walk. Nearly had a heart attack when I saw her trying to pass something black in her poo until I realised what it was ;D
Re: Eaten a sock! Welly had a habit of eating socks...one night about 2 am he sicked up a sock that had been missing for about a week, I pounced on it before he could swallow it again. A few hours later he sicked up 2 more small socks that I didn't even know we're missing. You can imagine we became a whole load more paranoid after that little episode, making sure no socks were anywhere around that he might be able to get at them. Once we were playing with a tennis ball indoors and I wasn't watching, look round to find the tennis ball had disappeared...I was really panicked in case he'd swallowed that as well. Turned out it was under a cupboard but took me ages to find it. When I mentioned it to the Vet he did say they often 'store/hide' stuff in their stomachs. He said not too worry too much but to take him back straight away if he was vomiting. That kind of out my mind at rest a bit. I think you have to be really careful with anything too long that can get stuck in their intestines so I'm always uber careful with cotton, threads, wool, string that kind of thing. He's now turned 10 months and seems much better with this kind of thing, I'm pleased and relieved to say Lisa and Welly
Re: Eaten a sock! Yes, keep an eye on him. If he goes lethargic or his behaviour changes worryingly go straight to the vet. Keep a look out for it coming up or out! Sometimes they take days before they reappear. Here is my thread about Tatze's eating exploits : touch wood we haven't had any for ages - due to my vigilance, not any change in Tatze's need to eat weird things! http://www.thelabradorforum.com/index.php?topic=6076.msg79135#msg79135 edited to add - I've just read the whole thread, I feel your relief!
Re: Eaten a sock! I was talking to a friend from Canada last night when she met my dogs for the first time. She used to have Labs and she was laughing at how they will eat anything. She said that one day, the farmer next door had a cow carcass in his field. Her Lab went bolting over to it and, before she could get there, the dog had eaten a massive amount of the cow's insides. She (the dog) started vomiting, but couldn't get the intestines out, so my friend had to help by pulling on them. She said it was metres and metres of the stuff! Gross!!!!
Re: Eaten a sock! Tara passed on the sock stage, and went direct to the front door mat! It regularly got dragged into the living room or kitchen, and was slowly getting smaller, as she chewed on the rubber. Thankfully, she only bit small bits off, then spat them out on the floor - I could put it back together, with glue, just like a jigsaw! We are now minus the doormat, and will be until she stops chewing (if ever).
