Re: Edible chews Glad I'm not the only one who has licked a Nylabone.... We feed pigs ears now and then and I would say they are quite fatty. Cows ears are less so. As for cows ears lasting longer - yes, marginally (measured in seconds, not minutes). Obi gets rawhide chews (knots and pressed bone shapes) as he doesn't really go hard on them - he mainly carries them around. A popular, low fat chew here are bully sticks (dried bull penises). The do not smell nice - gross all round, really - but they last Obi about half an hour (he is not a power chewer though). On the bone front, we go for the 'bone sandwich' concept that Angela mentions. Bones surrounded by meat, not just 'a bone'. We avoid large marrow bones as they are very hard (wearing on teeth) once the soft ends are gone - but if you are prepared to just take them away once the end knobs are gone I don't see any problem for teeth. We tend to go for lamb necks, lamb ribs, chicken carcasses, duck carcasses (when I say carcasses I mean once the breast and legs are taken off for human consumption), chicken wings, turkey wings, chicken necks and whole fish. Sometimes chicken thighs with the bone in. Chicken wings are a good introduction. Don't panic if your adult dog crunches the bones a bit then swallows the wing whole.
Re: Edible chews LILLY has tried the bull penises too. Didn't last long really (longer than a dentistix : ), and I had to keep them outside - they stank! They are sometimes called "Pizzles" I think and marketed as a natural alternative to rawhide :-\ jac
Re: Edible chews im still hunting for a safe healthy chew that lasts Brodick Big Gob more than five minutes. given his current favourite chewing items are duvets ive been doing a lot of experimenting too. Antos Hedgehogs and Crocodiles last him about five mins which is a record for him. ladylike cuillin will be busily occupied on these for a good fifteen mins chewing carefully. The Bulls penis route went down extremely well here and lasted brods at least fifteen minutes. i gave them their first ones in the pub with folk from work mind you. when i was asked what they were and happily told folk i saw numerous faces looking slightly queasy.... i had one of those Realisations that non dog owners need to be sheltered sometimes....

OK if I wait until I've got a new one though? I am sat here watching Charlie chew on a new stag bar. They have to be new because the attraction is trying to get at the bit in the middle, and so he gnaws the middle of the ends. But gosh, they are hard - and he is often using his front teeth to scrap away at the ends. Now worried about teeth.... oh no, that will leave me with kongs only. Right, bull's penis it is...where do I get them? Don't tell me I have to Q in the butcher alongside all the tourists ordering Cornish pasties and then ask for a bull's penis?
Re: Edible chews Just tried a wainwright's large vegetable chew - 4minutes 15 seconds. It says on the packet "feed as part of a balanced diet" - but gives me NO information about the energy content of the chew. Can see a traffic light system on packets for dog treats is in order here...
Re: Edible chews We use the Antos veg hedgehogs and stuff them with banana (or whatever) and freeze them just like a kong. Not sure they last longer than a kong but we dont have a kong anymore. Got left in the garden and died last summer We get both the hedgehogs and the pizzles from ecodogcompany online and they also do the anco roots. I think pets at home (aka DogsRUs ;D ) do hedgehogs but they are the small ones and not so good. Jac

Re: Edible chews Just like to say that it was a new Nylabone, straight out of the packet. The bull penises are cut into lengths and dried. They smell disgusting. But (or maybe I should say "and therefore") they are a big hit here.
Re: Edible chews Dear god....what have I started! The nylabone tasted like it looked....of hard ,plastic,apparently shards come off the size of rice.... And it was new straight out the packet!.I am NOT road testing a pizzle!this is my life you know,not a bush tucker trial!making my selections in the pet shop the other day i did lick a funny looking toothbrush thing that is really hard and will probably last 2 minutes ...but let's see!think its ok to do things like that in the pet shop....surely I am in like minded company?? He he he!home tomorrow night,so excited ,Chris follows me back on Friday,he's been up in Yorkshire ...both of us more excited to see Dex than each other I think !!!
Re: Edible chews - someone needs to test the pizzles - I've just ordered some! (It's not going to be me...) Yesterday's dentastix and veg stix has had an unfortunate impact on the other end... how odd. This pup can eat 5 in by 2 in of plastic with no ill effects, and a small dentastix and veg stix has me getting the hose and scrubbing brush out for the garden... yuk. Perhaps I should just feed him plastic :!
