So, I do all the dog walking in our household. In the mornings, I do separate session with individual training and in the evenings, I take them on a longer walk together. H sometimes joins me on this walk. Yesterday, I was horribly unwell. No idea what it was, but he said it was the most ill he'd ever seen me, and boy did it feel like it! I think it was just a 'flu thing, but I was in a lot of pain, inside and out - it felt like I'd been beaten up and was so pasty you couldn't even make out my dodgy goggles tan So, he took the dogs out for their walks. Came back and told me proudly how he'd been training them. Yesterday I was feeling too sorry for myself to even care, and promptly went back to sleep. Today, I feel a million times better, just rather weak, so I was back to work (from home) and up for taking them out myself, but he wouldn't have any of it; I think he was a bit shaken with how awful I looked yesterday and was pretty sure I'd end up in hospital. Drama queen So he took them out again, and again came back telling me all the wonderful things he'd been doing with them. I could only sit there and cringe. I've asked - who am I kidding? - told him not to train them, because he doesn't know what he's doing, but he sees me doing something and thinks that it's OK for him to do too. He knows that they had a blip with their recall a few weeks back, so I'm taking it super slow to reestablish it and only blow it when I know they're going to respond, and give them jackpot treats for doing so, but he still thinks it's OK for him to do it when they have their heads in something tasty. I must repeat - he was doing something good to help.... he was doing something good to help. I do appreciate it, I really do, but even though he appears to listen when I tell him what I'm doing with training and why, he's completely oblivious when "in the field". He was doing something good to help.... he was doing something good to help. Breathe.....
Re: Eeek! H "training" them.... He was doing something good to help....he was doing something good to help... Hide the whistle He was doing something good to help,he was doing something good to help, Hide the leads He was doing something good to help,he was doing something good to help... Crack him one with a ski pole ( sorry Mr Snowbunny :-\) All the same ,sounds like you were really grimly poorly ,glad you are feeling better and the dog whisperer can get back to his day job! X
Re: Eeek! H "training" them.... He'll be coming to my training session with Helen Phillips. I hope he takes some of it in....
Re: Eeek! H "training" them.... Glad you're feeling closer to normal - sounds like you had a dreadful bug!!! Awful. He was only trying to help, or feel involved, or something... Good that he's going to Helen Philips. Let him do some of the handling - she'll get stuck right into him ;D
Re: Eeek! H "training" them.... Hope you are feeling better today Fiona, sounds like a nasty bug. I trained David before I let him train our dogs and now he's really good so I count my lucky stars. Poor chaps they do try ;D You'll get them back on track in no time so try not to worry xx

I've heard it said some don't come back....

Wouldn't worry too much, I think no idea is better than a dodgy idea ;D For dome reason dogs have a knack of coping with OH training methods while retaining what thy are meant to do with you. Perhaps they recognise who's the boss Glad to hear that you are feeling lots better now

Sorry you've been so ill hope you continue to improve. Don't worry its a thing with OH's they try but oh dear. my dogs now always check with me if he tells them something and they are only allowed out with him if he is helped(looked after) by my friend. If I'm ill i'm usually in hospital in a morphine induced coma so what i don't now can't hurt me and i can sort it out the mess when I get home. The dogs are pretty forgiving and I am tough so OH devistation is kept to a minium. He is bloody funny though I have to praise him for everything even if its crazy
Gosh I am doubly lucky then as my OH is really great with the training and I don't have any complaints about how he interacts with her on walks... Although Poppy is four years old with rock-solid recall, heel work and steadiness, so it's no wonder really!!
I think you may never know what he did. The dogs will be their usual well behaved selves with you and do what he taught them with him. Unless they get confused when you both take them. Or you get just well enough to spy on him.
Well, this was over a year ago and not much has changed! So I just learn not to do new stuff in front of him
Well maybe a lot has changed in a year, however my reticence to allow hubby to train anything other than a sit..actually scrub that.. a handtouch..has not changed.
I've resorted to creating secret new cues for everything that we do as the OH has just about butchered everything else! He is under strict rules to never use the word 'stay' as he just says it and wanders of, completely forgetting that she needs to be released. Great. Just great.
