This book is about a Chocolate Lab guide dog. Rachael recently mentioned it, and I ordered it on Amazon - two copies arrived! I had completely forgotten that I had read this book when I was a kid, years and years ago - bits of it had stuck in my mind, and I did remember. It's an old book, first published in 1977. Obviously, the story of how a guide dog made a difference to a blind person is the main story, which I won't give here in case people want to read the book. But it's also really interesting reading about a young blind woman trying to get a job, and flat, and live independently, in the 1960s. She encountered attitudes and difficulties that I very much hope wouldn't be there today (I suspect some would though). I was most thrilled by the descriptions of off-duty Emma - she sounds so much like my hooligan Charlie (well, not quite as bad). Apart from she had a "working" on switch! Must work on that... ;D ;D ;D
Re: Emma and I I remember reading this too back in the late Seventies... My grandmother read it, then lent it to me. I can picture the old cover now. Interesting that you felt it stood up to re-reading after all this time. Clare
Re: Emma and I There are several books in this series telling the stories of her life and dogs, mainly Labs but a GSP as well. I named my Pointer Bracken after one of her Labs, I was reading one of her books at the time he came home. Sheila kept her sight and became a successful dog trainer somewhere up in the Nottingham area I believe.
