Re: Extendable leads - not the work of the devil I tried Lady on an extensible lead when she was a puppy. Not a good idea because she would go into a hooley too easily and the lead was a potential accident waiting to happen. I gave it up and used, and still use, a slip lead. However, now that she is grown up and pretty steady I don't think there would be any problems with using one. All I would add as a rider is that I think the type with a thin cord are potentially dangerous because they can give rise to really bad rope burn in the right circumstances, and other dogs can't see them. If I was getting another one I'd get the type with a tape lead. If Lady was ever on restricted exercise again I think it would be a useful tool.
Re: Extendable leads - not the work of the devil 6 years ago I was walking with my friend who used one of these extendable leads, her dog went behind her and the lead got caught up round her ankles, she fell and we heard the crack, I had to leave her where she was and run with 2 large dogs to get some help . Poor woman was out of action for 8 weeks, needless to say she threw the lead in the bin. I would definitely not use one, they make me cringe. In my humble opinion they are the worse thing to come onto the pet market.
Re: Extendable leads - not the work of the devil From what I gather (note in my very limited experience.. ) is that sometimes you need more than one lead depending on a.) what type of walk you are on and b.) the condition of your dog e.g rehabbing from injury/operation. We have 3 leads now for Benson, and each suits it's purpose. I do feel that it is so important to get the basics of a good heel in place whatever lead you have, but sometimes this is a challenge in itself, especially with some dogs, from a rescue etc... This thread has been invaluable in highlighting risks and benefits of the various types of leashes out there. Used our new "roamer" leash this morning and it is fab! Off to Cornwall tomorrow and needed something he can explore a bit with, but have some control over him in areas we are not familiar with
Re: Extendable leads - not the work of the devil The Secret Agent Dog Lead is good, it is 5 foot long also has a short control handle too and a clip that you can adjust if you need to tether your dog outside a shop etc. and you can buy a pouch that slides onto the lead to keep poo bags or keys in. Looks great, t's about £12 and comes in 3 colours.
Re: Extendable leads - not the work of the devil I used them in the past down a lane and am not a lazy dog walker as the dogs had free running in the afternoon ;D However, one word of warning, a neighbour used one and somehow the clip came off the collar (broke possibly, cannot remember) and flew back at great speed and hit her in the face just under her nose, she needed stitching! Still has the scar.

I am not a lazy dog owner either. I use the extender on barley as he can not be trusted off lead and just gives him that extra bit of freedom rather than being confined to a normal length lead for all of his walks.
Re: Extendable leads - not the work of the devil The lead that my OH bought seems to have a few safety features including a breaking strength for clip and tape that exceeds anything that I could reasonably encounter, and a brake to stop it flying back. So far, I've tripped over the long training line twice, and have two rope burns from it, as has my dog - so far at least, the extendable is ahead in the health and safety stakes.
Re: Extendable leads - not the work of the devil I agree with the worries about the thin cord type ones, you certainly can get a bad role burn from them. The "tape" ones are much better. And you certainly do need to be very careful about where you and anyone else is in relation to the dog, because of the danger of taking someone out at the knees. But I do believe that under the right circumstances and with a responsible owner, they can work well.

Re: Extendable leads - not the work of the devil It's not possible to have too many pairs of shoes, or too many leads.
