Hi! LouDog just turned a year old and is shedding like a maniac- i furminate every day and still when he passes we get a fur carpet. He eats Hills but I heard cod liverboil may help?? Any idea? We live in Norway where the temps have been up and down this winter but it's currently about 40'f- he has a really really coarse coat (besides the underbelly) with major gerricurl down his back
Mine is also shedding like crazy right now.....must be the Winter "shed". I try not to wear dark pants when this is happening! Hopefully it should stop soon! Maybe other Forum members will give you more insight.....if you are using the Furminator every day things should be slowing down a bit!
Maybe using the furminator every day is encouraging shedding. I only brush my dogs once a week, but to be fare they don't shed a lot at all. You also have to be careful not to remove Dougs undercoat with a furminator as they need this especially in a cold climate. Not sure if the oil works to reduce shedding.
Wondered if you started Loudog on any fish oil? And if it was helping? I give my pups fish oil every day and I am pretty sure it's helping a couple of issues. Fudge is 15+ And has a medium thick coat and usually sheds like crazy but we can only use the furminator once a week cuz her skin was so dry. Used a rubber brush the other days. Started the fish oil over a year ago and I swear the shedding has decreased and her coat is very shiny now. And no more itch. Rex is 2 and barely sheds but he has a much thinner coat. Very shiny too. Zeke is a pup but his parents have hair like you described. He is 4 months old. When we go see the breeder and Zeke's parents they always comment on how nice Zeke's fur is. We give the same food but I add fish oil. And carrots but I don't think that helps coat, eyes maybe. Lol! I also heard of giving them olive oil or even regular vegetable oil. See what your vet says to be on the safe side. the hardest routine for me to get into is to brush every day. I find a quick 30 seconds with the rubber brush daily helps. Then Fudge gets the furminator when I notice a bit of extra shed.
I don't brush unless they are having a season shed, and Willow's coat looks better for it. When I was brushing daily, she got dry skin. They have salmon oil every day, but I keep brushing to a minimum now.
Snowie has a dip in the pool every day, often twice a day, and he gets a rub down with a towel. I am sure it helps to loosen the hair and remove it. But in moulting season (onset of winter and onset of summer) nothing stops the moulting - he's changing his coat and the shedding must take place. I think it lasts for a couple of weeks or more. He scratches more and then I use a brush cos there is just so much hair - you could stuff a pillow! We vacuum our house three times a week and you cannot believe the hair!! Thankfully you don't see it easily cos Snowie is white/cream and the wooden floors are painted cream. Snowie gets salmon oil capsules every day. He gets compliments on his soft coat but I have no idea if it makes any difference to shedding, which I understand is a necessary part of "changing seasons".
