I'd just avoid if there's any risk
I avoid raisins, grapes and chocolate for pooches because of the possible risk. Which I would certainly do with garlic too, as anaemia can creep up over time.
Re: Flea prevention Having read both articles it is like everything, in small doses it is fine! It's like grapes, 1 or 2 will do no harm but a whole bunch will. Dorset Herbs produce a garlic tablet and if I was going to go down that route I would probably use these to ensure I was giving the safe amount. Chloe
Re: Flea prevention A friend walked her spaniels in the woods where we often walk and she picked about 30 ticks off her 4 dogs at the end of the day. We use advocate(to cover off lungworm) and a tick collar for the ticks. Fleas are covered by both but are probably least of my worries.
Re: Flea prevention Boogie, yes if my dogs were flea infested then I would use it for a month or two until the problem was sorted.
Hmm...maybe you are right about me having a flea thing! I thought treating fleas once they are established was terrible - once you see fleas, aren't your carpets etc full of eggs? So basically soaking the house house, and dog, and every bit of soft material in strong chemicals to get rid...and the dog and humans risking horrible bugs and disease from flea bites... Shudder...ok, I have a flea thing... ;D
Re: Flea prevention The flea pupae lie around the edge of the room, so if you vacuum round the edges you should have no problem. If there is a problem there is a product which stops the pupae hatching, can't remember what is called at the moment. Definitely treat for preventative of lung worm if it is in your area, otherwise just wait and see if you (rather Charlie) getas flea, I would be surprised if you did!
Yes, the vet said there is a big lungworm risk here, even calling me before his op to make sure I'd given the advocate on time. So if I using advocate, I guess the fleas get zapped too. Which I can't help but feel glad about! ;D. I don't much like the idea of waiting for them to turn up! ;D
Re: Flea prevention I use a tick repellent during the summer months, as we have myriads of ticks in our woods that may carry Lyme Disease and meningitis. I would only use frontline or similar outside of the season if we had an actual flea infestation. Also, I limit the amount I use - instead of every 4-6 weeks as prescribed, I wait until I notice ticks are starting to hitch a ride again. I'm not happy about the poison; but prefer it to the alternative of having to treat a possibly life-threatening disease. On a jollier note - one of my training pals says she puts a quartz crystal in her dogs' water bowl to repel ticks and fleas. She bought the crystal from an animal naturopath that we both know. Somehow the ticks don't like the effect of the crystal in the water, though she couldn't explain how exactly, must be the vibrations or something. Apparently you just drop it in, leave it overnight, and hey presto, no more ticks...! It's not quite as simple as it sounds though - every few weeks you have to recharge the crystal with an amethyst - also available from the naturopath. Please note how restrained and non-committal my report is.

Re: Flea prevention The "Billy no mates" arrived yesterday. Gave Albert his first dose. He ate his dinner no problem. I will keep you updated on how it performs. Jan
Re: Flea prevention Billy no mates natural flea and tick prevention update. Well I've been using this since the end of April and I have to report no fleas Yay! And only 2 ticks and I live in North Wales sheep country!. So I would give it a big thumbs up. And Albert has no problem eating it! Better than chemicals, although he was frontlined from the breeder at 8 weeks. Jan
