I have a 10 year old black lab, her name is Sage. She is a well controlled diabetic and also has laryngeal paralysis. Back in May she started having this foul smell everyday and still continues. The vet put her on antibiotic, changed her food, probiotics etc. Its not her anal glands which one would think. When she smells I sniff her and she doesn't smell from her body, odd I know. Sometimes right when she gets up she smells for the entire day and then other days she doesn't start smelling towards the end of the day. Its like this stink cloud is just hovering over her. Has anybody out there have this same problem, if so HELP!
Hi there, and welcome here! I'm not sure what you mean by "she doesn't smell from her body". Is it an intestinal problem resulting in gas? Or maybe some fungal/skin issues? Bad breath? Does the vet smell it too? Does bathing help? Sorry if these are obvious questions but just trying to get a clearer picture.
None of the above apply to her and yes the vet can smell her. The minute I got out of my car I could smell her and I smelled her from head to tail and I couldn't find where the odor was coming from. She is on gabapentin for her arthritis so I am going to ask vet when we first started that medication. If he says May then that maybe the cause. If it was a skin issue don't you think when I smelled her I would smell that scent? Maybe its something inside her and seeps out her pores lol.
Have you had her teeth checked? She might have a rotten tooth. Or she might have a bone stuck in her mouth that is causing rotting in her flesh. Can you open her mouth and have a good look? Someone I know had an older dog (miniature Schnauzer) who got a chicken bone stuck in his cheek that no-one noticed until it caused his flesh to rot. Another reason could be intestinal. And finally my thoughts are about her diabetes, which can cause the breath to smell differently if her blood sugar levels were unbalanced (you say they are). But you say your vet has checked her out? Best of luck getting to the bottom of it! Snowie was rather smelly these past few days (been very itchy and when he licks himself he starts to smell) so he got a nice shampoo today and smells lovely now!
