Hollie has overnight developed a 2in strip all along her back of fur which is going in a different direction that is had a day before.

She has always had little ripples down her back but she looks totally different now???

    Anyone else seen this?

    Re: Fur change

They do normally have a 'harder' strip of fur down the back - it's kind of like their raincoat. In the Standard it's described as fur with a harder feel. A bit of a wave to it is normal, though from a show perspective (if one cares about such things!!) you don't want too much wave. Often a really good, thick coat comes with a bit of wave though. :)

I assume that when you say 'different direction' you just mean the fur is noticeably different, not that it is pointing in a totally different direction..? Obi's coat down his back is markedly different - you can even see a line on either side where the harder fur ends and the softer fur starts.

Rachael that is exactly what it's like you can see the very noticeable line down her back which she didn't have a few days ago?

Their coat does change as they mature - I'd say she's just getting her grown up outfit on :) Interesting that it came through so fast.

I took a picture of Obi's back. The lighting is not great, but you can kind of see the contrast...

He's lying on his side there so the darker/coarser strip is along his back.

Bella has had the zipper strip down her back for several weeks now....and she's not even 16 weeks.... <shrug> ???

her mom had a bit of a longer coat than many labs I've known, so that might be part of it.

The 'zipper' thing usually refers to a line along the top of the muzzle and/or up between the eyes where the fur is actually growing in an inwards direction from the right and left and meets in the middle in a tiny crest. Kind of like two baby furry waves meeting on a furry ocean :)

That's not a zipper but it's a perfect example of what we're talking about in this thread :)

Charlie has a great zipper up his nose. :) :) :)

He didn't really get harder feeling back hair until this year's winter coat though (when he was 18 months), up until then his back fur was much, much, thicker than the rest but soft. It's a very marked difference this year though. His first winter coat coincided with him losing his puppy fur, so it's odd it didn't happen last year. Oh well, they are all different, I suppose.

Haha!! I'd heard the word "zipper" being used for the back wavy thing, but maybe the person who used it was using it incorrectly. It never looked like a zipper to me! The ferrets have a "zipper" up their bellies, which is a line of dark fur against light, but I LOVE Charlie's zipper nose! :D

This is a pic of Daisy's dorsal stripe, and you can clearly see where the softer fur down her sides begins. Interestingly, my old Lab/Husky mix, who was the exact same shade of cream, had the exact same markings on his back and hocks that my Molly (now deceased for 11 weeks :'( ) had, just very different texture.
