Re: GAMES owner of a young lab who loves to 'do ' things here. ive found the games she likes to play most are those where she is working with me. so we play a lot of Find it in the house and outside. she loves dummies, depends what floats your dogs boat...started easy with easy places and her just finding them, now she has to bring em back too...as she masters things i try and build on a new aspect of the game for her , currently gundoggy stuff, so now she has to do quite long waits while i go and hide things. ive also taught both of mine the names of toys ( simple, like Ball, Antler, Duck, ) and send them down the hall to pick out whichever one ive told them to get.i do nosework with them, hide a bit of salami somewhere and they have to find it....ive also had grt fun teaching them daft tricks. they love this, they can now do Double Spins which is hilarious to watch, puppy push ups, paws etc.i guess a lot of mine is gundoogy based turned into games so its a case of findibg out what ur dog loves to do and using that, im guessing agility and flyball for ur pup! hoping to get my two started on agility...
Re: GAMES Hi Lois, I do similar with mine as Debsie, finding named toys indoors and sometimes bringing them back to me , lots of sitting and waiting whilst I go out of sight and call them, giving right paw and left, lots of downs and down/waits, hiding treats. Hattie is asked to go to each member of the family by name and she can do that, Charlie is learning that too. You could teach her inside first to sit/wait whilst you go a few steps with a ball/toy and recall her to you for the item, then you could slowly move outside and increase the distance so you are working on her recall and focus on you, definitely do lots of that with Charlie Agility would be a good idea but I don't think trainers will take them until they are 1 year old due to growing bones, but you could check with your local club. Good luck Helen x
Re: GAMES We play hide and seek (in the house and outside). Person 1 hides while Person 2 holds the dog. When Person 1 is ready they whistle or call and the dog is released to go and find them for a treat from Person 1 and a big, happy pat. Then Person 2 hides while Person 1 holds the dog (etc). As you get more advanced with your training you can get the dog to wait without being held (don't rush that though). Tug of war is good too. If I win then I throw the toy for the dog. If the dog wins I swap the toy for a treat and then we have another game. You have to make it fun and also let the dog win sometimes (no-one wants to keep playing a game they can never win).
