Recommendations or advice please on glow in the dark, or LED collars. I have a black lab & live in the countryside. Thinking this may be ideal for knowing where he is on dark walks now the nights are drawing in. My concern is if they affect the dog's sight & are annoying for them?

Hi and welcome to the forum. I had a collar last winter with a reflective strip but didn't find it very useful. Living in rural France I had my final walk with Juno before it got dark and after that it was just in the garden for toiletting. I also bought a reflective vest in 2 sizes to allow for growth but after trying them indoors I wasn't impressed. Others may have some suggestions

I've been looking at the LED collars as well for when we take Ella camping. I'm interested to see what others think

I have some LED collars, and some lights that I can clip on normal collars. I don't use them much, as I don't tend to let my dog off lead in the dark, although my OH walks Charlie on lead with a light on his collar - he says it's safer as he is walking along a road and you never know....

I don't think either, the LED collar or the lights, bother Charlie at all. He never seems to act any differently when they are on, anyway.

I used them a lot once, in October, when I went away on holiday to the countryside (it was very, very dark in the evening) and there was a big field outside the place I was staying - I'd let Charlie out for a wee and poo last thing, and it was good to be able to see that he didn't go very far.

I have a blue one which is very bright when fully charged. We use it mainly on lead walks so that we are seen along dark roads and lanes as there are few street lights around us. It doesn't bother Mira at all, but it is so bright that it makes it impossible to see beyond her if we are walking down an unlit lane, unless we have a separate torch!
I think a red/orange one would be less blinding, but our blue one in flashing mode does have a dramatic effect on cars approaching us on the main road!! :D

I bought an orange one last night, due to be delivered on Tuesday. Mainly for use in the garden at night as our garden is over an acre and having briefly bent down to pick up a poo, completely lost Jura at 8.30pm when it was just starting to get dark. Thankfully she recalled immediately (thank goodness for the happy puppy and total recall!), but half the garden is left wild with long grasses and she is still small enough to vanish very quickly. The garden is secure but I still don't fancy traipsing round trying to find her by torch light should she find something more interesting than me - dead mouse for example!

I use a LED collar and have done with all my dogs. In the winter it will be dark by 4 in the afternoon and I live where there is no street lights.
With my labs all being black I find it very useful. I put the collar on over the collar he wear and have it on flashing mode. He can then move around the field and I know where he is.

Oh, I must dig Chepi 's out and find the charger. We didn't use it a lot last winter but it did come in handy and the lights didn't bother her. I can select lights off, constant or flashing.

I didn't have a charger with our collar. It ran off a watch battery.

I have them for my two. Just super cheap things from eBay. I think they were about £2.99 each. They work really well, and the dogs don't even generally notice them, until the snow starts laying on the ground and then they try to chase the reflection of the light on the snow :)

Thanks to everyone for these really helpful comments. The LED collars don't seem to affect the dogs at all, but taken they may be so bright they stop our eyes adjusting to the dark, thanks Kirriegirl for that pointer. They're not expensive so we'll just get one to try, thanks Chopper'sdad, the niteize looks great! Thank you everyone!
