hiya everyone not been on a while due to work, anyway tillys anal glands burst a few month ago and since ive been back the the vets twice one with anti biotics and again checking, the vet said it should heal on its own. Anyway 2 month on its worse!!! im so fed up and tilly seems to be in alot of pain with it the sac sometimes opens but wont express anything out. What else can they do?!?

Oh poor Tilly, how distressing for you both :( I'd be asking if there was a specialist I could be referred to I think.

Someone on one of my FB groups needed surgery on their labs anal glands - I think it was removal of the gland (if that is possible) rather than just cutting/incising it to let it drain out better.
What has your vet said with regard possible future treatment?

I know I've heard of the surgical procedures, they've been pretty useless if I'm honest they did her glands then gave her antibiotics for a burst anal sac.. We went back for a check up and it was still swollen and he said leave it it should heal on its own.. Well it's not ! I've been trying heat compressions but it opens the sac then it re heals and goes back to a abcess again a hour later and she growls when I do it so somethings not right I might suggest a cone of shame to and maybe something external before surgery tbh

She's being sedated tomorrow and. They're surgically cleaning it and taking a swab for tests to get best antibiotics and see what caused it

Removing anal glands is not a pleasant op, avoid it if you can. My German Pointer had problems years ago and I added some bran to her food which cured the problem, then withdrew the bran.

shes on anti inflammatory meds, pain killers and anti biotics until the test results come back with the right antibiotics prescription. Shes very tired and had to bring her home earlier as she was barking and stressed in the cages in the vets :( but shes doing ok :)
