I was helping a farming friend out with a big pigeon problem on Thursday last week. Clouds of wood pigeons were decimating his rape crops. They'd stripped a good third of a large field in just a few days. I set myself up under some netting at the bottom of a ditch on the edge of the current problem field and moved them on by shooting a few during the afternoon until dusk. I lost a couple and hadn't taken Lady with me so didn't have her to help sweep up afterwards. Took her out the next morning to find them, but Mr and Mrs Fox had been there before me and there were just two piles of feathers remaining. As we approached where I'd set up in the bottom of the ditch Lady suddenly perked up about 20 or 30 yds out as we came down wind of the spot and tested the air with her nose and trotted over to the ditch ran down into it and sniffed around where I had been sitting. Clearly she's picked up my scent. I had heard that Labs can pick up their owners scent from a long way away, but that's the first time I'd seen it in real life. Lovely dogs with amazing senses.
What a good girl she is Sam sometimes goes off tracking in the deer forest but always seems to find me , must admit it spooks me at times but I was told by someone in the know that he would first follow his own scent back to where he had first been , then pick up mine . They are simply amazing at times , I agree
