Today barley had a small breakthrough, he played fetch ;D

He came in from the garden with his giant flat tennis ball in his mouth and wanted to play, he does this sometimes and will fetch it down the hall a few times normally then give up. But not this time, he kept going and going, i even got the video camera out and video him doing it. He was doing so well i had to break the treats out, and usually this breaks the habit as he forgets about fetching and just thinks FOOD, but not this time, he fetched the ball i gave him a treat, we done this several times. I only stopped because i had run out of sea jerky tiddlers to give him, he went through 3/4 of a bag of Fish$dogs sea jerky tiddlers, that is how many times he fetched the dead giant tennis ball, and he done several more as well before i got the treats out.

I feel pleased about what he has done, and he has made me feel proud

Tha's brilliant Annabelle, but I have been advised on the forum not to over do the retrieving just do a few each day and then put the ball away this increases the desire to retrieve. If Barley loves that particular toy then keep it for retrieving training and do not allow him to have it at other times.

I have struggled with getting Charlie into retrieving and I also had a small breakthrough today :), but the key is to limit it and then your dog becomes really excited as you produce their beloved retrieving toy :)

Keep up the good work and we can compare notes :)

That's the thing, he only does it on rare occasions, i can not ask him fetch or make him want to play, it is on his terms when he wants to play fetch so i just take advantage of these are moments. He will do it for any toy, it is just what toy takes his fancy at the particular moment in time
