ATV trails are just opening this weekend after the winter and we heard some coming, nice and slowly by the sound of them. Oban looked north down the trails as I was still going east to the corner. Then I saw them too. What a good boy, he came to me without being asked, hand signalled CIRCLE to go around behind me to heel position, hand signalled SIT and held a nice hand signal STAY as the three quads turned the corner and went east. Even though they were old guys, trail wardens, going slowly, and they slowed down even more for us, they were noisy. I'd have had to yell without the hand signals. Thanks for slowing down fellas, not all do. For his part Oban enjoyed a nice romp through a mud puddle they'd stirred up for his reward.
When I was going to training classes, our trainer was always trying to get us to shut up and use our hand signals and body language rather than our voice. It is a good way to train. Has many benefits
Also good if your doggie goes deaf when old.... Always good to have both visual and hand cues for everything
Our grandchildren love using hand signals with Saba. Great, big, expansive gestures for 'sit', 'down', and 'stay'.
How many different things do all of you have hand signals for? We have sit, stand, stay, down, come, circle, swing, back, left, right, back up, go out and that's all I can think of. Not proficient in all, but most.
We have sit, stand, wait, stop (although that has been eroded recently), down, shake and "play dead" They are the ones we have taught, but I bet there are loads others we haven't taught and we probably don't realise we do.
We have stand, sit, down, wait, come and are working on stop. She's good at all of them apart from stand. Love hand signals @drjs@5 I agree I reckon there are ones we don't realise we use.
I do use hand signals and I was very glad I did, when my old dog went deaf and he knew what I want him to do.
I have sit, down, 'up sit', stay, left and right, come sit at heel, and a 'play dead' hand signal. We've been working on stop but haven't put a lot of effort into it over the last few weeks
We have sit and up-sit (same signal - I still don't have my head around why they need to be different cues), down, stop, left, right, away, heel, close (right heel), roll over, stand (very flaky), "go to place". That's all I can think of at the moment.
