Hi all Sorry it's been a while since I was last here! Bella is still doing really well after her double cruciate ligament op and we are almost 6 months post surgery ✌️ ( good article too by the way Julie T). I have recently bought Bella a new purple collar and lead as red apparently leads to her being called a 'he' which really annoys me ha ha . Any ways I know more training is required re her pulling as she is quite pully when she sees other dogs but I don't like her choking herself so I need a smother harness, preferably purple, so we are all matching she really doesn't like harnesses and runs away and hides , but until she's not choking herself or pulling me onto the road when other dogs are around I don't have much choice currently. I'm going back to the basics but other dogs r more rewarding than treats it would seem I read the article re harnesses and went to order the freedom harness via Amazon but it said it can't deliver to me?! What's that all able about? Thanks Claudia
She's had back fastening before and was ok with it she will still pull towards dogs but more manageable. It was fleece but just got all hairy so don't really want a fleece one. I had read front fastening might be better.
There's a huge debate about this. In a nutshell.. It appears that front fastening is useful to assist in control as it enables you to pull the front end of the dog around (therefore stopping their forward momentum). However, it also appears that it is possible that the front fastening harness may affect the gait of your dog which may affect their joints in the long term. I have no evidence or sources one way or another, just summarising the posts of a recent thread. Personally, we put Ella in a front and rear fastening harness when I was pregnant (struggling to hold ella). She has improved a lot since then and I think. We'll change the harness soon. She has no issue with harnesses so we'll probably change to a rear fastening. Glad to hear Bella is doing well
Thanks. I'm happy to get back fastening again as she can be managed its more her choking herself I don't like I had just read the reviews re front fastening... they have some simple ones online (back fastening) so maybe I'll just get one of those..
Abby had a difficult time learning to walk with me. She wanted to scamper after cars, trucks, squirrels, rabbits, people, other dogs.... trying her best to pull my arm out of the joint. It was so that I would be the only person able to walk her since holding onto a 70 pound mass of muscle in a hurry to go the opposite direction you were was similar to experiencing one of our Kansas tornados!!! First, I went with the prong collar. That worked well and she almost immediately began to behave. However, the prong collar was difficult to get on and off and she was not totally agreeable to having it put on her. Then I had carpal tunnel surgery and simply could not squeeze the prong hook to handle that style restraint. Our friend who trains dogs suggested the Freedom Harness. Abby was adept at pulling out of her strap collar and out of the harness we had for her. Our friend said the Freedom Harness was impossible for the dog to pull out of and the front hook would assist in control. Abby LOVES the Freedom Harness. When I pick it up she knows she is going somewhere and will immediately run to me and sit while I put it on. I use two leashes. I hook one to the front and one to the upper/back hook. Seldom do I ever need either or both. She has learned our "rules" well and is a pleasure to walk. However, we walk close to busy streets and roadways. I just feel more secure knowing I have two leads on her. If you can find one of the Freedom Harnesses I would highly recommend it... AND they come in purple!!!!!
